Story

Flight was released in 2012 and it tells the story of Whip Whitaker (Denzel). He is an airplane pilot for a major airline and he has a secret. Whitaker is hooked on cocaine and he is a raging alcoholic. Once a wreck happens and Washington is found to have drugs in his bloodstream the real issues begin.

The movie is very dramatic and it makes you wonder what is going to happen next. Also, it will make you think twice about flying in an aircraft of any kind. The film begs the questions of right or wrong, crime and punishment and of course forgiveness & redemption. I was into the movie and watched it two times in the same day. It is deep and full of emotional moments which will keep you glued to the screen until the credits come up. This movie is not really for people who are already afraid of flying.

Grade: A+

Acting

Denzel Washington: Washington was nominated for an Oscar for his outstanding performance. As usual he is amazing and his performance is memorable.

John Goodman: Goodman supplies drugs to Washington and he is basically a drug dealer. Truth be told he is rather convincing in his role due to his outfit, how he talks and his movements and demeanor. At one point, he dares the cops to do something to him.

Don Cheadle: Cheadle is an underrated actor because in this movie he delivers a top notch performance playing as an attorney for the airline. Cheadle gives a breathtaking performance and could play the lead role in almost any film on his own.

Kelly Reilly: Reilly did a fine job. It proves a great deal when Actors can stand on their own, in front of actors such as Denzel. I mean she played a convincing heroin addict.

Bruce Greenwood: Greenwood plays as the spokesman for the pilots union and he is a close buddy of Whip Whitaker (Washington). He wants what is best for Whitaker and for the airline.

Drama

This film is full of drama from start to finish. First of all, you got two plane crashes but then Washington, (Whip Whitaker) is facing prison time for carrying his addictions into the plane's cockpit. Although the other actors and the intense story contributes to the drama it is Denzel Washington's job acting that stands out. He can make you laugh, cry and smile all in a five minute period. Drama with a capital D is the definition of what this film encompasses.

Music/Sound Effects

The soundtrack to this hit film is not great but, it does go well with the movie and it fits it. The music is by Alan Silvestri and during the plane crashes the sound effects were extremely intense especially in surround sound.

As far as the songs on this movie, I would not like most of them in my car but, once again, they do fit with the scenes in the film. Overall, not a bad set of tracks to hear while enjoying the cinematic masterpiece known as Flight.

Action

Although not full of action, the plane wreck is an action packed ten minutes to be sure. The most action in this movie is most certainly the flight. This movie is more of a drama movie than an action movie. At the same time, all the action scenes are very well done.

Washington lives a depressed life and besides flying as a pilot and fornicating he does not have an active life.

Denzel Washington gives an unforgettable performance as a drug and alcohol addicted airline pilot who fights his problems on a daily basis.

Behind the Camera.....

Flight was directed by Robert Zemeckis, written by John Gatins and the producers are Laurie McDonald, Walter Parkes, Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke. Without a doubt, the story was well written and the production team helped put it together. As far as the directing goes, Bravo! This film is sure to become a classic hit over time as more and more folks see it.

Special Effects

The scenes when the plane goes down is well laid out and the plane that did not wreck showed some good clips too. The only complaint is not enough scenes have or need the use of special effects. To be fair it looked in all the background scenes on the plane like the people were actually in flight. The plane bursting through thick clouds also looked sensational. Turbulence at its worst.

Grade: B-

John Goodman & Denzel Washington

Flight was nominated for two Oscars and many people felt it should have won both awards. The movie is realistic and will hold your attention without a doubt.

Final Thoughts and Overall Grade

To be honest Denzel Washington is among my top few favorite actors ever. Flight ranks up their as a top 10 performance of his career which is saying bunches if you consider all of his great films. The acting, directing and plot of the movie was perfect.

I would definitely recommend this dramatic motion picture to anyone and I promise you will not regret it. The DVD has some awesome special features and lots of them. I didn't get to see this classic at the theater but I did buy the DVD and I was pleased.
