Elvia Cadena ~ Forbidden Fruit

Updated on December 4, 2020

It seems every five years, or so, the Pop music world unveils an artist who has a voice that is both familiar, yet unique, old, yet new. A voice that seems to echo great singers of yester year, but with their own unique flair and contemporary style of singing.

When you hear Elvia’s voice, you are immediately transported back to the hey-dey of Jazz and Pop music of the 40’s and 50’s and the boozy, saucy voices of Eartha Kitt or Etta James. And for contemporary artists, Erika’s Badu and Amy Winehouse are comparable voices.

”Forbidden Fruit” seems to be the perfect music debut for Elvia. It emotes a sassy swag with innocence, two qualities very evident when speaking with her. She has a fun and alluring charm that should serve her well in today’s Pop music culture where a likeable personality, can bring a singer farther and faster to success in a matter of months thanks to the internet. Just ask Cardi B, a talented hip-hop artist to be sure, but who came into the music game with millions of followers from her internet and YouTube postings, and reality show. A personality that could not be denied.

I caught up with Elvia in San Bernardino, CA. on the set of her new music video for “Forbidden Fruit” to discuss the song, her career, touring locally with her band mates, Rich G and the Midnite Cruzzers, as well as signing her first label deal with Round 2 Music Label in Riverside, California, and working with Janet Jackson songwriter, Melanie Andrews.

Elvia's Story

When you hear Elvia Cadena sing, you are reminded of some of the great jazz voices of old such as Sarah Vaughn, or Billie Holiday. And in the modern era, many would compare Elvia’s voice to the late, Amy Winehouse, who happens to be one of Elvia’s musical influences.

Her love for music she attributes to her mother who sang to her as a child growing up, and Elvia felt as if that is what she was meant to do...sing.

She began singing in the children's choir at St Anthony church in San Bernardino, California. From there she graduated to the teen's choir where she discovered her voice and musical gift. After graduating high school, Elvia performed at various gigs in and around the Inland Empire of California, and recently joined the Midnite Cruzzers band in July.

Elvia is excited about signing with Round 2 Music and is currently in production on her first original single, ‘Forbidden Fruit’, co-written by her and multi-platinum songwriter, Melanie Andrews and producer, Jay Shanklin.

Elvia says of working with Melanie, “WOW! Shes awesome, I like how she hypes me up when we are in the studio and the tips she gives me in vocalizing and all that. I enjoy working with her."

Before working with Round 2 music, Elvia did a few features on one of her friends recordings, and so she was familiar with being in a studio. Now that she is with Round 2 Music, she has already recorded 2 tracks, including a holiday song for Christmas, “Santa Baby”, and will be back in the studio to record her second single soon.

As a songwriter. Elvia had never sat there to try to write her own music until a friend asked her to be featured in his music. “He would leave my space out for me to come up with my own lyrics and since then, I was like hey I can do this. So yes now I write my own stuff. My new single Forbidden Fruit was written by me.

When asked what genre of music she felt fit her best, Like R&B/Soul, R&B/Pop, or Neo-Soul, she would reply that she is all in one, “I have a little bit of everything in me. LOL! I cant sit there and say I'm just one genre cause I feel like I can add a bit of it all in one. IDK if that makes any sense.”

What’s in store for Elvia in the new year of 2020 musically? “Great music to come. I have a lot in my head that I want to put together song-wise. I would love to act as well. Growing up, I was in teen Improv classes and it was fun. I liked being in character.”

“Forbidden Fruit” co-writer, Melanie Andrews, on writing the song with Elvia

"Forbidden Fruit" is a super fun new original song with a retro feel with pop/r&b influences splashed in. We loved collaborating with Elvia on her vision for this song she started! It is definitely catchy and my favorite part is Elvia's whistling sections! That girl can whistle as well as she sings! It's very impressive!!! My music partner Jay Shanklin blew me away again with nailing the music composing & production of this upbeat music track!

Elvia is an extremely gifted new artist!! She has an unique voice, sound, and style! I must say she's one the most fun new artists that I've worked with! Her disposition is awesome and she always lights up the room with her smile and playful personality!

Elvia talks about how she came up with the song:

The song came about from way back to when I was in high school. When your kinda getting into the whole I want to have a boyfriend thing. I had a friend who had a boyfriend, he would always flirt with me and I kinda liked it but I knew that I should stay away cause he was my friends boyfriend. I'm sure a lot of girls could relate to that, I'm sure they have had experiences like that back in school or even now. Lol! As far as working with Melanie and Jay I love it. They are really easy to communicate with. They understand what I want right away. We click! I showed then my song, what I had in mind. The rhythm, all of that and Jay immediately put a lil something together to get started. Melanie helped me out with a few things on the song and with the background vocals. It was just awesome to be able to have someone understand your ideas just like that!
