Funny Netflix Movie Suggestions
Well Intentioned Netflix Movie Suggestions Gone Wrong!
For those who don't know, Netflix has this cool little feature that allows you to rate movies you've seen in the past to suggest other movies you might like.
Overall it works pretty well and it has suggested some pretty cool movies that I wouldn't have known about or considered on my own. However, as you might expect, Netflix's "Suggestions for you" feature is far from perfect. In fact there are some instances where the movies Netflix suggests based on movie you've seen in the past is just plain comical.
That simple idea is the idea behind this little lens!
Movie Suggestion - Transformers: The Movie (Animated) - Based on: Chappelle's Show
Here Netflix decided my love for comedian Dave Chappelle and his definitely adult focused Chappelle's Show clearly indicates I would love the animated Transfomers movie.
I can't speak for everyone, but I personally don't see the connection. Perhaps Optimus Prime leads a colorful personal life that I don't know about ???
Try again Netflix!
Movie Suggestion: The Crow - Based On: Weird Science
As a kid growing up I enjoyed the campy 1980s comedy, Weird Science starring Kelly LeBrock and Anthony Michael Hall. Knowing I enjoyed a cheesy 1980s comedy where two kids create their own e-girlfriend using a PC, Netflix of course suggested a dark and gritty violent gothic tale from the mid 1990s; The Crow.
In one tale two geeky kids create their own fantasy girlfriend. In the other a murdered rock musician comes back from the grave under the watchful eye of a dark and mysterious hypnotic crow to avenge he and his fiance's death in a gritty and violent cult classic. Nice job Netflix!
Movie Suggestion: Spartacus - Because I Enjoyed: American Dad!
I sometimes like to watch the animated comedy American Dad!. It's a pretty clever adult oriented animated sitcom from Seth MacFarlane about a politically conservative CIA agent, his hippie daughter, nerdy son, talking pet goldfish with the brain of a German athlete, and the wise cracking alien they hide.
It makes perfect sense that Netflix would use my interest in American Dad! to suggest I check out seasons 1 and 2 of Spartacus. Why wouldn't off color humor about a secret CIA agent and his alien harboring family mean I was interested in a show about the legendary Roman tale of the struggles of a Thracian man torn from his homeland and sentenced to a brutal death in the arena after leading a mutiny against the Romans?
A tale of a warrior that manages to outlast his executioners and a naked grey animated alien that manages to escape his. That's pretty much where the similarities end!
Movie Suggestion: Just Friends - Because I Enjoyed: Transformers
I have a young son. I'm a male. Michael Bay's 2007 film Transformershas action, explosions, fast cars, robots, and Megan Fox. Of course I enjoyed it!
Since I like loud explosions, action, and hot vehicles that transform into robots of course I would enjoy the romantic comedy Just Friends. Right?
One film has Megan Fox and a multi-million dollar special effects budget; the other is a chick flick about a dorky guy who gets crushed by a girl in high school, eventually blossoms into a big time womanizing music executive, then subsequently falls for the same girl yet again when he gets stranded in his hometown. This suggestion would work perfectly as a "Not Suggested For You" recommendation.
Movie Suggestion: Battle Royale - Because I Enjoyed: Aqua Teen Hunger Force ?????
This one just made me think WTH?
Aqua Teen Hungerforce is a strange yet funny adult animated television show about animated superheroes plopped smack dab in the middle of New Jersey. Frylock is a box of french fries that can shoot laser beams out of his eyes. Master Shake is a shake cup with no real super powers other than being funny. Meatwad is. . . well a wad of meat . . with the superhuman ability to transform into different shapes. The show just gets more off the wall from there. They don't spend as much time fighting enemies as they do annoying their disgustingly gross neighbor Carl.
Since I occasionally enjoy Aqua Teen Hungerforce, Netflix decided to make the jump and recommend the Japenese foreign film Battle Royale. From what I gather it is a dark, controversial and violent Japense thriller about the Japanese government introducing a strict new punishment to deal with disruptive school children. Japanese students are randomly chosen and taken to a deserted island where they are forced to fight each other to the death.
Only in the world of Netflix can a mild interest in animated fast food lead to a movie about Japanese kids being carted off to an island where they are forced to kill each other. Definitely makes you scratch your head!
