Game of Thrones Costume Ideas for Adults

Unique DIY Game of Thrones Costume Ideas

I discovered A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin, after watching Season One of HBO's Game of Thrones. I was totally entranced. Spellbound, in fact. Here was epic fantasy with captivating, gritty characters, great dialogue, stunning locations, exquisite costumes, and surprising (sometimes shocking) plot twists and turns.

Once I discovered that Game of Thrones was part of an epic series, I found audio copies and listened as I worked . . . and then listened again. I was the first one in my local bookshop when the long-awaited fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, was released. Even though it is a weighty tome, it was over far too quickly. If you have ever dreamed of castles, thrones, men wearing armor, and women in elaborate dresses with long, flowing sleeves, well, this series is for you.

Once you become hooked on the series, you may even want to dress as your favorite Game of Thrones character. Of course, there are costumes available with wigs and inexpensively made clothing all in one bag. But it is so much more fun to pull together a truly unique costume to pay homage to your favorite character—and the costume will be better!

If you're like me, you want to bring a little bit of magic and inspiration to your costume . . . and not even strictly for Halloween! Here are some tips for constructing a great costume and making it unique and authentic.

Jon Snow and the Men of the Night's Watch

Any Jon Snow or Men of the Night's Watch costume must include certain elements. If you're as big a fan as I am, you can probably name some of the main items off the top of your head:

  • Black vest, leather or vinyl with metal studs or buckles, or without
  • Black knee-high boots, leather or vinyl
  • Sword
  • Black cape or cloak, with fur collar or without

Snow and the Men of the Night's Guard have to protect themselves from Whitewalkers and other enemies. Consider adding these details to your costume:

  • Leather or metal armor over your chest, arms, and legs. You can make your own armor out of moldable vinyl.
  • A chain-mail tunic. If you can't find chain mail, you might try making your own. Chain mail is actually just a bunch of wire loops connected in intricate patterns. Get some wire mesh and fashion a simple vest or buy some good wire and make a bunch of rings to interlock together.

The Unique Detail: Snow's Sword

Adorned with wolf's head pommel, Jon Snow's sword Longclaw is made from precious and rare Valerian Steel. As a bastard son, he wasn't in line to inherit his father's blade, but he received Longclaw from Jeor, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, after saving him from Whitewalkers.

Heavy and solid, this is more than just a dress-up costume sword!

Your DIY Melisandre Costume

Melisandre's long red hair is a big part of her look. There is also an inner fire searing in her eyes; you'll have to practice that to pull it off! Aside from the hair, there are a few basic elements of Melisandre's look:

  • Gown, medieval style
  • Gold chain belt
  • Hooded cloak

The Unique Detail: Ruby Choker

Melisandre is a priestess who claims to have powerful magical abilities. She wears a gold choker around her neck made of large gold links. At the center is a big ruby that glows whenever she performs magic.

A Unique Cersei Lannister Costume

Cersei Lannister is the ambitious and cunning Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Her scheming and plotting form some of the best drama in the series. Cersei has classic Lannister looks and a costume paying homage to this character could include these elements:

  • Long blond hair, with delicate braids on the side.
  • A regal red gown of velvet or some other luxurious fabric.
  • A fur stole.

Unique Details: Gold and Wine

Capture some of Cersei's ambition in your costume with gold jewelry. Cersei would wear gold from Casterly Rock, perhaps in the form of a lion!

Carry a goblet of wine and say that it is the strongwine she had served to her husband, King Robert, the night he was fatally injured by a boar!

DIY Daenerys Targaryen Costume

Daenerys Targaryen, or Dany, lives in exile and is sold into marriage, though she gradually comes to love her husband. After his death, she comes to believe that she is the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. A Dany costume could include:

  • Long white hair, of course
  • Purple eyes (or makeup!)

Unique Details: Burned Clothes and Dragon Eggs

Give your Dany costume a distinctive touch by making yourself and your clothes look burned. Remember, Dany walked right into Drogo's funeral pyre! Also, carry three dragon's eggs with you, like the ones Dany placed near Drogo's body.

Princess Sansa Stark

Young Princess Sansa Stark dreamed of court for so long, only to discover it is a horrible place under a refined facade. However, she is forced to play the game and she finds out how dire the consequences can be for those who fall out of favor. A Sensa costume could include;

  • Ginger-auburn hair
  • A light powder-blue gown

Unique Details: A Pup and Cakes

Sansa had a dire wolf pup she loved and named Lady. A stuffed, or real, dog would makes for a great authentic touch. Also, Sansa is very fond of lemon cakes. Carry of tray of them to offer around to your friends!

DIY Jaime Lannister Costume

Before he is captured, Jaime Lannister enjoys all the finery a Lannister has coming to him: capes, armor, long swords. A more interesting take on a Jaime costume might be to dress as the character in captivity. This costume could include:

  • No sword!
  • Long-sleeved white shirt (dirty it up a bit)
  • Long black vest
  • Knee pants (with some rips)
  • Boots

The Unique Detail: A Head Wound

Add a bloody wound on your forehead, from where Catelyn Stark hit you with a rock!

A good idea which would take some work and creativity, but will scare kids to death is a White Walker/Other. I just think it'd be fabulous!
