Top Ten Grand Canyon Movies

Updated on September 16, 2013

Fantastic Movies and Photos of the Grand Canyon

After making a very recent trip to the Grand Canyon, I decided to showcase the Top Ten movies that highlight the Grand Canyon.

Being a photo buff, I took many photos and am sharing those with you also. These are all my photos, unless otherwise noted and there is nothing like a panorama of the Grand Canyon to get you excited about being there. Many people try to explain what it is like but it is difficult to express in a photographic journey without actually being there or by using panoramic photography.

I was inspired and investigated movies either depicting the Grand Canyon in some way or just by the fact they were filmed there. Some you will notice as those "oh yes" moments, while others you may have never known the correlation.

Please enjoy this website and your trip to the Grand Canyon through my photographic journey and please participate and leave comments.

Thank you for visiting.

Hollywood and the Grand Canyon

When you think of movies that depict or are filmed at the Grand Canyon, not many come to mind unless you really think hard about it.

If you are Chevy Chase fan, you are sure to remember his quick trip to the Grand Canyon with the family on the way to Wally World and before Grandma dies.

If you like Susan Sarandon or Geena Davis, it is hard to forget their plunge into the Grand Canyon at the end of the movie while clasping hands in their car.

However, one of the most recent and best known journeys to the Grand Canyon is actually in the movie entitled "Grand Canyon." Although the canyon is not depicted until the end, it is mentioned at various times in the movie and intertwined into the lives of the characters.

Please enjoy this motion picture and photographic journey of one of the seven natural wonders of the World.

Grand Canyon (1991)

It took me many years to see this movie but after I did, it has become one of my favorites.

This is a story with intertwining lives and circumstances. It reminds me a lot of "Crash" with all of the plots and sub plots.

The Grand Canyon is in this movie, I just won't tell you where or when and spoil the fun.

Thelma and Louise (1991)

Thelma and Louise are common-folk who turn criminal and travel on a wild spree. If you have not seen it, it is very entertaining.

This movie brings out the desperado in all of us and although we don't want it to happen to us, it is in many people's fantasies.

The Grand Canyon is at the very end of this movie.

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family travel across the country to get to Wally World, the movies version of Disney Land.

On the way, they go through Arizona and have a glance at the Grand Canyon on the way to Grandma's home in Phoenix, where more comedy ensues.

I love this movie and you will too. If you have never seen it and need some laughs, it is highly recommended.

This movie was filmed at the Grand Canyon and has a scene or two of the Grand Canyon in it.

Alex (Matthew Perry) becomes 17 again and the hijinx begin. He marries Isabel (Salma Hayek) at the Grand Canyon.

Funny stuff if you like comedies, chick flicks or actors from "Friends."

Several scenes in "Transformers" are set in the Grand Canyon as well as the scenes in the original cartoons which were airbrushed and cartoonized.

In these films and cartoons, the Grand Canyon is depicted as Mars.

In this movie, Nurse Betty (Renée Zellweger) travels across the United States.

The scene at the Grand Canyon is considered the funniest in the movie and includes Betty and Dr. David Ravell (Greg Kinnear).

Two couples plan to a trip to a Monster Truck Rally in Reno, Nevada and travel across the country.

The Grand Canyon scenes were filmed at Navajo Point. This is a funny movie, especially if you like Redneck comedies.

I love these old "Billy Jack" movies and there will be no others as good as Tom Laughlin.

In this episode, the scenes at the Grand Canyon are where Billy communicates with his Grandfather. Very nicely done for a 1970's film.

Before you watch this particular movie, I recommend that you see the other films in this series that precede this one. All are available through Amazon and the same link above.

Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster at their best! Not to be confused with the television series of decades before.

Maverick was filmed at the Grand Canyon and many of the majestic backdrops were from there.

A fantastic film, if you like Westerns, great scenery, Gibson or Foster or a combination of all four!

I always wanted to visit these beautiful and famous places of America, but when you live in Europe, that's a little complicated. Never the less this is on my boot-list.

@MillBucks: Thank you for the compliments. Life does get in the way. I have been there several times but probably wouldn't go back by myself. Cousins were visiting from Belgium. God Bless!
