great family movies
Off My Shelf, family Movies You'll all love
Most people I know are forced to watch the same boring kid's movies over and over again. So how in a world of lame children's movies can you grown-ups keep from losing your sanity? This list maybe able to help you. I love to share good movies with the world and as a screenwriter I like to watch a lot of movies, sometimes just because they have the same theme of a screenplay I have been working and want to make sure they're not too alike. I hope you enjoy this list and discover at least one new family gem.
Great Stuff on Amazon
Hoodwinked is like my favorite fairy tale, caper, comedy movie ever. Red works for her granny, she delivers homemade goodies to people in the woods. There is a wolf and squirrel following her. A happy little bunny and a axeman who accidentally cops down the forest. Someone is stealing all the recipes to the goody shops in the forest. All the characters are being interrogated by the police and are giving their ever different accounts to the officers.
I found parts of the plot predictable, but it is the little silly and funny things that the characters say in the story that make this enjoyable for adults. What I love about these humorous things is that they aren't dirty. Your child isn't going to be watching this in ten years (like I did with Howard the Duck) and be thinking man this is dirty.
Number two had more action, but number one is far better.
The Princess Bride
I loved this movie as a child and I still do. The Princess Bride is funny, sweet and very romantic. Buttercup was in love with a penniless servant boy named Wesley who had been lost at see five years before. She is not yet a princess, but she soon will be when she marries the prince. She is then kidnapped by a small creepy man, a giant and Indigo who is looking for the six fingered man that killed his father. She is rescued by the dread pirate Roberts who is really her long lost love. Their happiness is short lived, the prince finds them and forces Buttercup to go back with him and detains Wesley. This movie is full of magic, love and sword fighting. Stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, Wallace Shawn, and Peter Falk.
The Lillte Mermaid
The Little Mermaid is loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson of the same title. Being a Disney movie, it has a happier ending. A mermaid saves a man's life and falls in love with him. She strikes a deal with an evil sea witch and becomes human, except she doesn't have her voice and can't tell him and the Witch uses her voice to convince him that she's the one he wants. The music is still enjoyable and fun, even after twenty years.
This came out when I was young, but it is still a good film. What I like about The Little Mermaid is that it is different than all the other Disney fairy tale movies before it. The handsome prince actually had a personality. All the princes before him were stiff and didn't have much to say, it was like we were telling our children just marry a stupid prince, as long as he's cute.
Toy Story 1, 2, 3
Toy Story is the action adventure story of how toys come to life when there is no one around, and if a human sees them moving they will be frozen forever. It also deals with jealousy when someone you love gets a new friend aka a new toy. The movies are heart felt and I liked all of them and since there are three of them you can play a different movie for your child and not become completely crazy by them.
Let's face it, most of us liked this movie when it came out 15 years ago, when we were young adults, teenagers and children. Also the last movie can be enjoyed by children, but is more geared for the adults that grew up with these toy tales. I always wanted a Pizza Planet.
Shrek 1, 2, 3, 4 plus Shrek 3D
Shrek has five movies altogether. The Shrek is about an ogre who's home is being invaded by fairytale creatures, a nearby Lord is rounding them up and sending them to his swamp. The Lord says he will send the magically creatures somewhere else if Shrek saves a princess locked in a tower and guarded by a flying fire breathing dragon. Shrek accidentally saves one of the magical creatures an annoying talking donkey named Donkey who loves to sing and ask questions.
There is a 3D DVD short film game that played interactively in an amusement park. The short is called Shrek 2 and 3rd, the movie is only sixteen minutes long and is about the Lord's ghost haunting them and trying yo get his revenge. You can now buy it with a newer Halloween special.
The second movie is were Princess Fiona takes Shrek home to meet her family.
The 3rd is about the death of a King and Shrek not wanting to be the new king of Far Faraway, he sets out to find Prince Author the only living male who could take the crown. He finds Author only to discover that he is only a young teenager who may not be up to ruling a kingdom either.
The last film features a mistaken wish that shows Shrek what would have happened if he never existed. He needs to recreate true love's first kiss if he is going to survive and gain his family back.
