Great TV Shows Worth Watching Again on DVD

Updated on June 18, 2014

List of Good TV Series

Have a favorite TV series worth watching again? Or perhaps you're looking for a series you've never seen before for your viewing pleasure?

Here are some series that have been popular in my household, that are no longer airing first run episodes. Most are family friendly.

If you're not familiar with a show, be sure to check out the youtube trailer, promo or theme that accompanies each TV series showcased. Hopefully, you'll find something you like.

If you like Smallville, it is available below on Amazon.

Smallville TV Series

I never watched an episode of Smallville until some time in its third or fourth season when I randomly watched it as there was nothing else on. I loved it! I immediately went out and bought the first season on DVD. My kids and I were hooked.

Smallville follows the younger years of Clark Kent, beginning in his teenage years, as he learns of and developes the abilities that will help him grow into one of the world's best superheroes: Superman. Starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent and Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luther, the show also features John Schneider and Annette O'Toole as Clark's parents.

Take a look at the original WB promo of Smallville.

Smallville: Season 1

Interested? Here's the season 1 DVD. It begins with Clark arriving on Earth and Martha and Jonathon Kent finding him. It also shows the beginning of a friendship between Clark and Lex Luther. (Yes, the same Lex Luther that becomes his greatest enemy.)

If you're already a fan, the complete series is now out on DVD covering all ten wonderful seasons of this great series.

Smallville Posters

Here are some posters from Smallville. Great for Tom Welling and Superman fans as well.

Lost TV Series

On a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, a group of strangers are thrown together when the plane crashes somewhere on an island in the Pacific Ocean. Not only do they need to work together to survive, they also have to deal with many mysterious happenings on the island.

This show can drive you nuts, (in a good way,) because each time a mystery is solved, a new one comes along. If you're a fan of J. J. Abrams, you won't be disappointed. Here's the trailer for the season 1 DVD.

Lost Season 1 DVD

Lost - The Complete First Season
Lost - The Complete First Season

In my opinion, the pilot of this series is one of the best pilots ever made for TV. It has all the elements of a big screen movie. The first season is a great introduction to the characters as well as an introduction to the mysteries of the island.

Lost the Complete Series

If you're already a fan, you would probably like to have the complete series. What's nice is that there are a lot of bonus features.

Lost Merchandise

There is still some great merchandise available for Lost fans. Here are a few of my favorites.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World

As a mom, I feel lucky when I find something that all of my kids like to watch. I was searching the Internet and came across this series. Filmed in Australia, The Lost World is loosely based on the book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This proved to be a great family selection. A bit campy at times, but all in all a family pleaser in my home.

The show revolves around a group of explorers who find themselves stranded on an island back in time. They go up against dinosaurs, hostile natives and more. It has a colorful cast of characters with some humor thrown in. Here's the opening theme.

This show ran for three seasons. A fourth season had been planned by producers, but unfortunately, due to funding issues, fell through.

Reaper TV Series

This show is wickedly funny, literally! On Sam Oliver's 21st birthday, he finds out that his parents sold his soul to the Devil. He is now expected to become a bounty helper for the Devil and retrieve escaped souls and return them to Hell. Due to some adult humor and situations, this show is not advised for younger viewers. However, teens and adults will find many good laughs on this combination drama and comedy series. This is a great trailer for the first season.

Discover this fun series and a Devil you both love and hate, thanks to the acting talents of Ray Wise.

Heroes TV Series

Imagine waking up one day and finding you have a special power. Perhaps you can see the future or maybe have the ability to travel through time. This drama series is about ordinary people having special abilities that not everyone is happy about. This highly acclaimed series ran for four seasons on NBC.

This is a serious television series aimed more for adult audiences. This is the season 1 DVD trailer.

Heroes Complete Series

Heroes ran for four seasons. I really enjoyed the diversity of characters in the series. My favorite was Hiro Nakamura. Here's the complete DVD collection.

Monk TV Series

If you like detective shows with some humor, Monk would be considered a good choice. Adrian Monk is a former detective for the San Francisco police who nows works for them as a consultant. He suffers from phobias and obsessive-compulsive behavior, which manifested even more when his wife Trudy was murdered. His dreams are to find her killer and get reinstated as a detective. Overall this is a fun, feel good show. Here's the opening theme.

Monk Season 1

Start from the beginning with season 1 as you get familiar with the characters. Tony Shalhoub is brilliant in the leading role. My family got a lot of enjoyment from watching this series.

The complete series consists of 32 discs which cover each episode over the eight years the series ran on USA Network.

SeaQuest DSV

This is a wonderful, realistic science fiction series that takes place in the near future. If you like underwater adventure, then check this show out. The first season is more scientifically based, while season two delves more into the paranormal realms. This series is a good family show. Season two is also out on DVD, but season three has yet to be released, although it can be found on Netflix.

I really loved "Heroes." I know it got a bit wonky towards the end but I was hoping for another season to wrap up all the lose ends.

Funny how with box sets and Netflix I have caught series I did not catch the first time and loved them. Some series I caught later for the first time are 24, The Wire, FireFly, and Prison Break. With each I was anxious to get to the next DVD or episode. Heroes too, but it was mentioned. One of these days I want to start Lost and see what the fuss was about.
