Ashiya Mizuki (Maki Horikita), a Japanese girl who was raised in California, USA comes back to Japan with one goal in mind: find Sano Izumi (Shun Oguri), a hopeful high jump hero who quit after an accident and get him back into the sport. One late night while training in the US, Sano sees Mizuki being cornered by a group of thugs and helps her escape from them. She manages to escape but the bad guys were able to catch up with Sano and one of them inflicts a nasty slash on his ankle. He is then unable to jump properly again so he quits the sport. Mizuki blames herself for the incident and vows to make him jump again. Sano goes to Osaka Gakuen, a boys' private boarding school that places a premium on looks, so she disguises herself as a guy - short hair, flat chest, lowered voice and all - and enrolls in the school. She finally meets him there and even ends up living in the same dorm room with him.

Sano overhears by chance that Mizuki is actually a girl but he feigns ignorance so as not to scare her away. Meanwhile, Mizuki falls in love with Sano but it takes a while before he reciprocates since he is too caught up in his own problems. On top of this, Mizuki's friend Nakatsu Shuichi (Toma Ikuta) is finding himself strangely attracted to Mizuki even while he thinks that she is a boy, leading him to question his sexuality.

In the Hana Kimi Special, Nakatsu and Sano reminisce about the time Sano falls in love with Mizuki. This takes us back to the weeks between Episode 7 and 8 where Mizuki's friend Julia from America comes to Osaka Gakuen to bring Mizuki back. While Julia is in Japan, she decides to act as Mizuki's girlfriend.

Hanazakari no Kimitachi Setting - The world of Hana Kimi

Osaka Gakuen
Osaka Gakuen

Osaka Gakuen (or Osaka Academy) is the fictional setting for the Japanese drama adaptation of Hanazakari ni Kimitachi. It's an all-boys school known for its handsome male students, hence Hana Kimi's tagline "Ikemen Paradise" which translates to "Good-looking Men Paradise". Its sister school is St. Blossoms, an all-girls high school, where the students are the exact equivalent of those in Osaka Gakuen.

There are three classes for each of the three school years. These nine classes are divided into three dormitories, as most of the students do not stay around the school area. The culture within the individual dormitories are immensely different. Dorm 1

students are comprised mainly of athletes as most of them got into Osaka High on a sports scholarship. The dorm head student is Tennouji.

Dorm 2 has a mix of athletes and scholars since most of the students had sports or academic scholarships to enter the school. The dorm head is Minami Nanba. The main characters Mizuki, Sano and Nakatsu all belong to Dorm 2.

Dorm 3 consists mainly of artistic and intelligent people and is headed by Masao Himejima. Inter-dorm rivalries are common and would get particularly intense during the school's cultural festival.

"For you in full blossom."

"For you in full blossom."
"For you in full blossom."

Read the Hana Kimi Manga (English) by Hisaya Nakajo - Read the original version of Mizuki, Sano, and Nakatsu's story.

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e is based on a comic series of the same title written by Hisaya Nakajo. The manga was serialized in Japan in Hakusensha's semi-monthly shouju manga magazine, Hana to Yume and ended with volume 23 in August 2004 in Japan. It was then published in English as Hana Kimi by Viz Media with the final volume released in the United States in April 2008.

There are some differences between the manga and the drama, alhough the concept and characters are the same. For one, in the comic, Sano got injured while saving his friend. In the drama he got injured while saving Mizuki. Some genders are also different in the drama. I'll stop here so I don't spoil it for you so you can get a chance to read the original story too.

Your thoughts about this page are most welcome too.
