Have You Ever Seen The Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Updated on August 1, 2014

Have You Ever Seen The Rain Song Lyrics

Have You Ever Seen The Rain was written by John Fogerty, whose writing talents were behind so many of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits from the 1960s and 1970s.

The song was released in 1970 on their album Pendulum and rose as high as number 8 in the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart in 1971.

It is thought that the lyrics for the song are making a reference to the Vietnam War, with "bombs raining down from the sky". John Fogerty was called up by the Draft Board in 1966, but was fortunately able to enlist in the Army Reserve and not have to go to war.

Another band member, Doug Clifford had also been called up at the same time, and served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Following their military discharge in 1968, all four members of the band, John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, Tom Fogerty (John's older brother) and Stu Cook, all left their jobs to focus on the band as a full time career.

Their second album, Bayou Country which was released in 1969 signalled their success, with hits like Proud Mary and Born On The Bayou.

A little know fact is that Creedence Clearwater Revival played at Woodstock, however because John Fogerty thought that their playing sounded sub-standard, they appear neither on the Woodstock film or the Original Soundtrack.

The band broke up in 1972, but John Fogerty's career in the music industry is still going strong as a solo artist.

Song Lyrics: Have You Ever Seen The Rain

Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival from the album Pendulum

Written by John Fogerty.

Someone told me long ago

There's a calm before the storm

I know it's been coming for some time

When it's over so they say

It'll rain on a sunny day

I know shining down like water

I want to know

Have you ever seen the rain

I want to know

Have you ever seen the rain

Coming down on a sunny day

Yesterday and days before

Sun is cold and rain is hot

I know, been that way for all my time

'Til forever, on it goes

Through the circle of fast and slow

I know it can't stop, I wonder

I want to know

Have you ever seen the rain

I want to know

Have you ever seen the rain

Coming down on a sunny day

I want to know

Have you ever seen the rain

I want to know

Have you ever seen the rain

Coming down on a sunny day

@CrossCreations: Lots of songs bring back fond memories for me, often from longer ago than I care to remember. Funny how we can listen to something and recall events from days gone by isn't it.

Love Creedence! We have similar taste in music and I'm impressed by the way you create these web pages, very nicely done. Here's a Creedence Clearwater Revival story... Long ago I had a friend whose MOM was a Creedence fan! She'd turn it on and dance around the kitchen and that just tickled me to death. To this day, whenever I hear Creedence I think of that fun lady. You can bet that my parents would never ever listen to such music.

Love this song, although I confess I only know it through The Ramones version! Was nice to hear and read about the original version!

Have You Ever Seen The Rain is one of the best of Creedence Clearwater Revival. I would say all of CCC songs are great and my favorite is Long As I Can See The Light.

Can you imagine a 13 year old loving "Sledgehammer" by Gabriel?? -- yeah, I loved that song (among countless others)! "Have you Ever Seen the Rain" is a cool tune. I first gravitated to it when I met my "honey"; he's a big fan.

Well, I am back to report that this should be Jacksonville Florida's theme song ... we are experiencing a drought ... a previous report said that it had been some 91 days without rain. My grass looks might sad -- don' know if it will survive. Have you ever seen the rain? Well, last night we got some thankfully.

Holy Smokes ... Have I Ever Seen the Rain? Yes indeed ... we have been bombarded with rain here in Jacksonville, FL for the past two days ... it caught me out in it when I was raking up piles of nuts from the water oak trees out back.
