The Hee Haw Honeys

Updated on January 12, 2013

The Hee Haw Spin Off

Most people are familiar with the variety show Hee Haw that ran from 1969 to 1992. In 1978, a spin-off of the show was created, featuring some of the bit players on the popular series. The show? The Hee Haw Honeys.

The series was set in a diner/nightclub in Nashville Tennessee, and took two of the ladies from Hee Haw, Misty Roe and Lulu Roman, along with newcomer Kathie Lee Johnson (now Gifford). Kenny Price played the patriarch of the family, Kenny Honey, and Gailard Sartain played the only son Willy Billy Honey. The two daughters, (Rowe and Johnson) played Kathie Lee and Misty Honey, who dreamed of making the big time.

Hee Haw Honeys Short-lived

The Hee Haw Honeys show only lasted one season, unfair, really.

The popularity of Lulu Roman and Misty Rowe alone should have given the show more of a chance than it had, but alas, viewers simply wanted to see an extension of Hee Haw, when they got actual storylines and character development, there was little interest, and the show was dropped after only one season. It did however, inspire a road show, and the Hee Haw Honeys entertained in spots all over the country, pleasing audiences with their skimpy outfits and baby-doll antics.

Gunilla Hutton & Misty Rowe

Gunilla and Misty were heart throbs for many in the late 1970s regardless of whether they lived in the city or the country.

Unfortunately Gunilla was not a part of the cast for the Hee Haw Honeys spin-off.

The Gorgeous Misty Rowe & Kathie Lee Johnson

Misty Rowe was known for her gorgeous figure and silly-sweet antics. In many ways, she typified the "dumb blond" although she was anything but. She has had a film career as well, most notably playing Marilyn Monroe in two separate movies: "Goodbye Norma Jean" and "Goodnight Sweet Marilyn".

Kathie Lee Johnson, who had been the newcomer to the show, went on to marry sports legend Frank Gifford and host the morning show "Regis and Kathie Lee" for many years. She now is a correspondent for the "Today" show.

Hee Haw Beauties

Here are some of the beautiful women from Hee Haw. Misty Rowe is at the top left.

Misty Rowe as Marilyn Monroe

Misty Rowe played the part of Marilyn Monroe in two different movies:

Kenny Price & Gailard Sartain

Kentucky native Kenny Price was often called "The Round Mound of Sound". He was a very talented singer and songwriter, and while he had several songs on the charts, the big time eluded him outside of the ranks of "Hee Haw" and the Honeys. "Walking on the New Grass" is one song he is noted for, along with "Northeast Arkansas Mississippi Bootlegger." Sadly, he passed away in 1987 due to heart complications.

The hapless Willy Billy, otherwise known as Gailard Sartain has had quite a busy film and television career, appearing as the "Big Bopper" in the Buddy Holly story, the sheriff in "Mississippi Burning, and most recently, "Elizabethtown." He is also an extremely talented illustrator.

Lulu Roman

After the Hee Haw Honeys was canceled, Misty and Lulu continued to do bits on Hee Haw. Lulu Roman, who was known for her charm and cheerful disposition had long since recovered from the drug abuse that nearly destroyed her in the early 1970s. Her out of control behavior even forced the producers of Hee Haw to drop her from the series in 1971. She returned after cleaning up her act and finding God.

Lulu's weight, which at one time reached over 300 pounds was in part caused by a thyroid condition she had been born with. She recently had surgery on her stomach, and has dropped a considerable amount of weight.

She is an extremely talented singer and gospel recording artist, and still performs.

Hee Haw Honeys Cast Reunion

The Hee Haw Honeys show may not have lasted long, but the characters remained in our hearts, along with the performers who played them.

In 2008, the cast was reunited at the TV Land awards, along with many members of the old "Hee Haw" gang. I guess we will never know if Kathie Lee and Misty Honey ever made it to the big time, or if Willy Billy ever got a lick of sense.

So many unanswered questions that must be laid to rest at a little nightclub in the heart of Nashville, whose lights dimmed far too quickly.

Kind of a blast from the past. I"m more of a rocker, but Roy Clark is still one of the better guitar players I've heard and by far the most entertaining.

I never knew about this spin-off. Its funny, the Hee Haw show has come up in several of my friends conversations lately, especially Minnie Pearl. I wonder if there's a revival on the horizon?

Because the Hee Haw Honeys only lasted one season...I never got the chance to see the spin off. In 1978 the studios were very much concerned about ratings and if they were to low a show would be dropped immediately...unlike today when a show can be picked up by cable and internet media companies.

      @GreatGazoo: Hi,

I'll never understand how the studio people decide what goes on the air.

I don't know too much about the "Hee Haw Honeys," but am acquainted with Misty Rowe's former husband. She did a great job in "Goodbye, Norma Jean."
