Hey Arnold Costumes

Updated on July 31, 2013

Dress up as your Favorite Nickelodeon Hey Arnold! Character

Hey Arnold! is a Nickelodeon cartoon by Craig Bartlett that aired some time from 1996 to 2004. It's personally one of my absolute favorite cartoons - it's a feel good cartoon series with personality, humor, and a side of romance (of course). It also happens to be a favorite among a good many others so it should be a great idea to consider wearing a Hey Arnold! costume this Halloween!

How much do you love the Hey Arnold show?

Meet the Hey Arnold Gang! - The Main Characters

The Characters of Hey Arnold with labels
The Characters of Hey Arnold with labels

Before anything else, how about a refresher on the main characters of Hey Arnold? You can see all of Arnold's main classmates above, and I've made labels so you don't forget who's who, namely - Arnold (of course), Gerald (his best bud), Helga (the one with the closet crush on Arnold), Rhonda (the fashionista), Phoebe (Helga's sidekick), Stinky (the guy with the Southern twang), Sid (the paranoid guy who wears go-go boots), Eugene (the dancing prancing happy-go-lucky clumsy guy), and Harold (the bully with insecurities)

There are a couple of other memorable characters in the show, such as Harold's love interest and Brainy, the only guy who knows about Helga's feelings for Arnold (and the guy who always gets punched because of it!) Excited to dress up as one of these characters? Scroll below for details!

Make sure you buy a dress that won't fit you too snugly because you'll be wearing a white turtleneck shirt inside it. Roll up your turtleneck so it is more prominent, just like Helga's. If you can find a short sleeve turtleneck, that will be even better. Otherwise, you can just roll the sleeves up. Get a red belt and place it on your dress for that red detail Helga's dress has. Or you can use a red ribbon and just stitch it on the dress (make sure you just use a simple stitch so you can easily take it out if you plan on wearing this dress again sans the red ribbon).

I'm happy to say that the pink dress I found below is the correct shade and the cut is pretty good too! As an added bonus, you can actually wear this on normal occasions. I also added in another dress option - the shade is slightly incorrect but the cut is great too.

As stated in the previous article: Helga's unibrow is actually a straight line unlike the one below, so you might like to make your own - just buy some black felt paper, cut up a ridiculously straight thick line, and then stick on your face.

For added effect, bring a heart shaped photoframe with Arnold's face on it :) And bring that cranky Helga attitude we all love ;)

I love this tank dress! It's flowy enough for you to wear a white shirt underneath, and it's in a correct shade of pink!

Arnold Costume for Adults - Football Head's Outfit

As I said on the previous section, Arnold's costume is SUPER simple. It's basically a red plaid flannel collared top and an emerald green pullover. Don't tuck the flannel top so you can see some of the plaid sticking out from the top and from the bottom. Any simple pair of blue jeans will work :) And of course, don't forget his cap!

It's difficult to find the right wig for Arnold, but I suggest a spiked wig, which you should tuck under your cap so that only the right/left ends of the wig pops out

Just like Arnold, this wig is spiked and swept back a bit.

Arnold Costume for Kids - The Idealistic Football-Head

Arnold is the main character in the show - as the title suggests ;) He sees the good in everybody and goes out of his way to help anyone in need. He's a class act!

Hey Arnold Shirt - The Football Head on your T-Shirt!

For days where you just want to tell the world how much you like Hey Arnold, or if you want to cheat a bit and just wear a character t-shirt to the Halloween costume party (sneaky you ;)), check out some great Hey Arnold shirts below!

Gerald Costume for Adults

If you're going with your best guy friend to the party, it will be really cool if you went as Gerald and he went as Arnold! Gerald's most important piece is the red long sleeve shirt with the number 33 written in white on the front. If you have a Scottie Pippen shirt with the 33 on the front instead of on the back that will be perfect, but otherwise, just buy a plain red long sleeve shirt, then just cut up the number 33 with some white cardboard paper or use some vinyl adhesive number stickers (or if you really want it more authentic, have the number 33 silk screened on the shirt), and you're good to go. Simple jeans will suffice, then wear some cool mid cut red sneakers.

For the wig, sadly there aren't any fro wigs out there that have the exact same height as Gerald's 'do so I picked two pieces for you to choose from :P

Gerald's hair is an exaggerated shape of a tin can so these wigs really capture the essence

Gerald Costume for Kids - Arnold's Wing Man

If you're going with your best guy friend to the party, it will be really cool if you went as Gerald and he went as Arnold! Gerald's most important piece is the red long sleeve shirt with the number 33 written in white on the front. To do this, just buy a plain red long sleeve shirt, then just cut up the number 33 with some white cardboard paper or use some adhesive vinyl stickers shown below (or if you really want it more authentic, have the number 33 printed, silk screened, or heat pressed on the shirt - this should not cost too much), and you're good to go. Simple jeans will suffice, then wear some cool red sneakers (preferably mid cut).

The Love Triangle

Helga vs Lila

One thing that is really fun to watch about this show is the love triangle between Arnold, Helga, and Lila. Arnold has a crush on Lila, who is an extremely mild-mannered country girl, who has a very soft voice and always includes "ever so" in her sentences. She's almost the complete opposite of Helga, who is a loud-mouthed bully. Helga gets jealous when she sees Arnold trying to cozy up to Lila, who actually just likes Arnold as a friend. As a result, sometimes Helga does things to sabotage the two. For example, at the carnival ("Love and Cheese" episode), Lila confesses to Arnold she's afraid of big fast rides, so Helga asks the ride controller to crank up the speed of the ride. Haha!

Helga Punches Brainy - Again and again and again... - All the Brainy / Helga scenes. Hilarious!

No Helga confession scene is complete without Brainy sneaking up from behind, giving his trademark naughty smile (and that peculiar sound he makes!), and Helga punching him (sometimes breaking his glasses in the process too!). Watch the video and reminisce the fun times!
