Top Ten Horse Movies

Updated on May 22, 2015
Source

Horse movies make perfect gifts for horse lovers of all ages!

Horse movies capture our hearts, appeal to our senses and uplift our spirits. The horse movies listed here are inspiring must-see movies with noble, beautiful, brilliantly-filmed horses.

On this page there are kids' horse movies, horse racing movies, and wild horse movies... all labeled so you'll know which is appropriate for your needs.

Horse movies make great gifts. Children, especially, love to own movies they can watch again and again.Horses are noble creatures that have worked at the side of humankind from many many centuries. Horse love is in our blood.

1. Into The West - 1993 - ...Ireland, the sea, the gypsies... a beautiful, soulful epic!

This is my favorite horse movie. I love the two adorable little boys. The horse is spectacular. The story is heart wrenching and memorable. And... it takes place in Ireland, land of my ancestors. This is a movie I could watch over and over. I especially love when the boys start singing, "Let's go riding on a horse!" That is so very cute!

There are some great scenes - such as when the grandfather finds the white horse and it follows him to Dublin. Then the boys take the horse into their tiny run-down tenement apartment. They are obsessed with watching wild west movies so horse-ownership is a real thrill for them. There are scenes in a gypsy encampment, and in the beautiful, green, Irish countryside. This is a beautiful movie!

Amazing story, beautiful horse cinematography, adorable kids... plus sweet Irish accents. I really love this horse movie!

It is appropriate for children, or for adults that love beautiful white horses, and children!

There are some amazing scenes, such as when the boys take the horse into their Dublin tenement apartment, and try to conceal it there while watching cowboy movies. These boys desperately want to go "Into the West" and a horse could help!

The scene that tugs on my heart is of the two boys, after they have run away to save the horse, riding bareback and singing "let's go riding on a horse." They are so darn cute!

The Black Stallion

This horse movie is spectacular... a must see!

One of the best! This features a gorgeous black Arabian stallion who gallops across the beach acting wild and uncontrollable. What a beautiful sight!

This horse movie is low on conversation, but high on value - if what you want to see is a horse in action. It starts on a passenger ship off the coast of Africa. A young boy is traveling with his father - but tragedy strikes when the ship capsizes and sinks. The only survivors are the boy and the horse. The boy is saved by clinging to a rope tied to the horse... but the horse is wild and for a long time, the boy can't get near him.

Alec is foiled in his attempts to rescue his a beautiful black stallion but in the end, all things are set right

Once again movie viewers are treated to incredible scenery, beautiful horses, minimal verbiage, compelling situations, and a great horse race.

This is a true story.

He won 37 of the 51 races he was entered in.

Ruffian

Another true-story movie about a famous race horse. This one, Ruffian, was born in Kentucky. In 1974 she won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Two-Year-Old Filly. People started calling her "Queen of the Fillies".

In 1975 she won the Filly Triple Crown, also called the Triple Tiara. After she went undefeated in her first ten races Secretariat's trainer said "As God as my witness, she may even be better than Secretariat!"

Unfortunately life was cut short for Ruffian on July 6, 2005 when she was injured during a match race. Despite her injury, she would not stop running, and this led to injuries from which she could not recover.

I read National Velvet when I was a kid but was really disappointed with the movie. The Pie was black and white in the book.

      Great idea for a lens!

The videos are great, and there's lots of selection here! Plus of course lots of polls for interaction, although I found myself skipping them after a while as I play the part of Jane Q. Public as opposed to the Squidoo Points Hunter. :)

I'd love to see a sentence or two summarizing what each movie is about, even if I don't watch all the trailers. You say, "This horse movie is spectacular... a must see!" Why? What's it about? (I ask this about the only movie I actually have seen and love ;) ). You were more specific on some (National Velvet, Horse Whisperer) than others. Remember that search engines can't see pictures or videos; they need words.

I am grateful for the large type in the introduction module. I donno why, but that looks sharp.

How about the one that Vig M is in. He rides across the desert in a race. It is all about the horse. Can not remember the name. I think a text snippet about what your impression of the movie may help sales. Just one detail for each movie that stands out because each director will have his artist style. Music, color, story, the actor, the horse, the angles, the locale; just one of these so the reader is not overwhelmed.

One of my favorite horse movies when I was a little girl was "The Horse in a Gray Flannel Suit" with Dean Jones -- it's a typical 60s Disney movie. I don't remember any of the other actors, but it was one of those typical plots -- young girl (who loves horses and competes in horse shows) with a widowed father who doesn't understand her, girl meets a single woman perfect for her dad who brings them all together and horse saves the day. I ate it up.

Also, what about "Something To Talk About" with Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid? That's pretty horsey!

"Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" It is about a woman who did horse diving, whent blind, then learned to ride agian. Horse divers mount the horse bareback while it is galloping, then ride it over a cliff into a pool of water. Awsome scenes of her learning to mount the horse in motion again, while blind, out in the rain .. its my favorite horse scene. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3858930944/tt0103262

This movie makes your heart pound in excitement and worriedness it is called Secretariat. I give this movie 5 stars from the epic races he wins and how strong penny tweedy was to not give up( penny tweedy is secretariats own if u didn't know). I would say add this to the list. Also it's a newer movie.
