35 of the Most Memorable How I Met Your Mother Quotes
Whenever I tell someone about what the show How I Met Your Mother taught me, three things immediately pop into my head: life, love, and most importantly, friendship.
To some, it's just another sitcom with cringey lines and situations that create forced laughs. But for me, it is a show that will always remind me of love, heartbreaks, and how life throws one challenge after another at you and all you can do is face them to become a better person.
All this mixed with some situational comedy? I say, why not? And so today, I share with you some of my most favorite quotes from How I Met Your Mother. Hope you love them as much as I do.
Ted Mosby Quotes on Destiny
Ted Mosby is the quintessential nice guy in the show, a hopeless romantic who is crazy about Robin and wants to make her his life partner. But things go downhill and they eventually break up. This was the turning point for Ted. Despite the breakup, however, he's one guy who continues to believe in destiny.
To me, the yellow umbrella portrays hope in the show. And that's what Ted tries to explain here. He believes that behind every dark hour in a person's life, there is a yellow umbrella waiting.
"But that's the funny thing about destiny: it happens whether you plan it or not. It turns out I was just too close to the puzzle to see the picture that was forming."— Ted Mosby
While talking to his friends, Ted tells them about his relationships with other girls. He always planned everything but sometimes, things don’t go as planned. And that's when you need to improvise.
"Now, I'm not saying you can't take action to affect the outcome of your life, you have to take action, and you will. But never forget that on any day, you can step out the front door and your whole life can change forever. You see, the universe has a plan, and that plan is always in motion."— Ted Mosby
Trying to cope with heartbreaks, Ted comes up with one of the most beautiful quotes of the show. Instead of talking about breakups, he explains that everyone needs to see the happier side of things and what would have happened if things went according to the plan of the universe.
Ted Mosby Quotes on Life
In a conversation with Robin, Ted blurts out why he was so crazy for her and how he would take any chance to impress her.
"Every night can’t be legendary. If all nights are legendary, no nights are legendary.”— Ted Mosby
A drunk Ted riles up in front of Barney and explains that every night can’t be as legendary as Barney says. It's fascinating how people figure things out after drinking a bottle too many.
"If you’re really honest with yourself about what you want out of life, life gives it to you."— Ted Mosby
In a discussion at their favorite pub, Ted tells his friends about how he honestly wanted to know the owner of the yellow umbrella. And life gave him the answer.
Ted Mosby Quotes on Moving On
Thinking about his times with Robin and how madly they were in love for each other, Ted reveals that it is better not to hold on to your past as you will never be able to relive it again.
“It’s only once you’ve stopped that you realize how hard it is to start again.”— Ted Mosby
Moving on after breaking up with Robin was one of the toughest times in the show for Ted. And this line says it all.
“You may think your only choices are to swallow your anger or throw it in someone’s face. There’s a third option: you can just let it go.”— Ted Mosby
This is another one of my favorites. Fed up that his partners always let him down, Ted, in a tranquil moment, thinks that it is better to let things go instead of having any grudge against anyone.
"Sometimes things have to fall apart to make way for better things."— Ted Mosby
Ted, being the nice guy in the show, always found a way to see the brighter things in life. And even after heartbreaks and breakups, he believed that there were better things to come in the future.
"Everyone has an opinion on how long it takes to recover from a breakup."— Ted Mosby
In a conversation with his friends about breakups, Ted beautifully explains how everyone feels sorry and tries to console the other after a breakup. But most importantly, everyone has their opinion on why the breakup took place.
Ted Mosby Quotes on Love
This quote describes Ted the best. He believes that you should do whatever you can to love the person you want. Even if people don’t agree with your opinions.
“Shouldn't we hold out for the person who doesn't just tolerate our little quirks, but actually kind of likes them?”— Ted Mosby
When talking to Robin about love, Ted explains that sometimes relationships are hard. And partners need to compromise to see the happier side of life.
"Love doesn’t make sense! You can’t logic your way into or out of it. Love is totally nonsensical. But we have to keep doing it or else we’re lost and love is dead, and humanity should just pack it in. Because love is the best thing we do."— Ted Mosby
Ted is a romantic by heart. No matter how many breakups he faces, he just keeps trying. And this quote perfectly captures what he tries to mean.
“Sometimes love means taking a step back. If you care about somebody, you should want them to be happy even if you wind up being left out."— Ted Mosby
With his life revolving around Robin in the first season, Ted just couldn’t help but keep his hands off her. But their relationship didn’t last long. And in a somber moment, Ted thinks to himself that true love sometimes means to watch your loved one stay happy the way they are.
Robin Scherbatsky Quotes on Life
Quirky, moody, and beautiful inside out. Robin became my favorite character from her very first scene. Apart from her romantic adventures, Robin also has a deep philosophical side that many people fail to notice. Her quotes on life prove that.
Robin delivers yet another fantastic line while talking to Ted about life and its hardships. She was talking about how everyone needs to experience both the good and the bad to experience the journey of life.
"If you keep giving up on people so quickly, you’re gonna miss out on something great."— Robin Scherbatsky
In an attempt to explain to Ted about breakups, Robin comes up with this beautiful line that portrays her philosophical side excellently.
While talking about the never-ending mishaps that her friends are going through, Robin explains that everyone should face life as it comes instead of contemplating about how scary the situation is.
Lily Aldrin Quotes on Life
Most sitcoms develop a relationship between friends over time. But Lily and Marshall were together right from the start of the show. Lily is a straightforward woman. She is the most intelligent in the group and her quotes reveal the substance in her character flawlessly.
Lily feels that you can’t always plan your life. Sometimes you need to improvise and take a leap of faith by believing in yourself.
"We struggle so hard to hold on to these things that we know are gonna disappear eventually. And that’s really noble."— Lily Aldrin
Love, loss, and heartache make life an experience to remember for everyone. And to Lily, no matter how hard you try to hold on to your happy memories, they will eventually disappear one day.
"So really, the bigger mistake would be to not make the mistake, because then you’d go your whole life not knowing if something is a mistake or not."— Lily Aldrin
Everyone makes mistakes. And our mistakes give us a reason to learn and understand. If you don’t make mistakes, you'll probably have a lot of regrets later in life.
"It's just, eventually we're all gonna move on. It's called growing up."— Lily Aldrin
Unlike Ted who became philosophical while explaining about breakups, Lily is pretty straightforward. To her, heartbreaks mean life is giving you a chance to grow up.
Lily Aldrin Quotes on Marriage
While Barney is busy talking about how marriage is a baseless act, Lily comes up with this line to counter him. And I couldn’t agree more!
"If you keep using words like winning and losing when you talk about our marriage, you're going to lose me."— Lily Aldrin
Lily warns Marshall not to objectify their marriage as a game that they need to win. Their relationship is beyond winning or losing. It shows how she feels about their relationship and also about Marshall.
"The main reason I love you, Marshall Eriksen, is because you make me happy."— Lily Aldrin
We see Lily and Marshall as a couple from the first episode. Marshall does everything to keep Lily happy. And that's what Lily loves about him.
Marshall Eriksen Quotes on Life
Like Ted, Marshall is also a good guy in this show. In the beginning, I thought of him as a geek. But as it turned out, Marshall was one of the most intense characters who used his happy-go-lucky nature to hide his feelings.
Marshall always looks happy but this line to Barney proves his philosophical side. While Barney talks about living every day legendarily, Marshall believes that sometimes life gives you unexpected things that you never really imagined.
“It’s not about proof; it’s about faith. Faith is what gives life shape and meaning.”— Marshall Eriksen
Marshall tries to convince Lily that enigmas are not a myth. They are real. And even though there is no substantial proof, it is faith that can often give meaning to your life.
Marshall Eriksen Quotes on Love for Lily
Marshall believes that sacrifices and compromises for the right person make everything easier in life. And he is glad to have Lily as the right person beside him.
"Yeah, I'm scared, ok? But when I think about spending the rest of my life with Lily. Committing forever with no other women, it doesn't scare me at all. I'm marrying that girl."— Marshall Eriksen
Again, Marshall explains to the gang why he is marrying Lily. Marshall, like Ted, is a true romantic. And this line proves why.
"Lily, there are a million reasons why I love you. But the main reason is you're my best friend, Lily. You're the best friend I've ever had."— Marshall Eriksen
Love begins with friendship. I think How I Met Your Mother portrays this theme beautifully. And that's precisely what Marshall tells Lily while explaining why he loves her so much.
Barney Stinson Quotes on Life
Honestly, I hated Barney for the most part of the show. And I couldn’t even imagine that Robin, out of all people, would end up with him. But behind his ironic catchphrases, lazy puns, and misogynistic jokes, Barney had a sensitive side too.
Although there is a lot of humor in this line, it somehow makes you think of the special bond you share with your friends and why they are so important in your life.
Barney Stinson Quotes on Love for Robin
This got me feeling for Barney. It was at this moment that I realized that Barney always had a thing for Robin. His lines prove how madly he is in love with her and even though it had been painful at times, the joy he felt with Robin was definitely well worth it.
"Robin: I'm such a mess. Why do you even like me?"
Barney: "I guess, because you're almost as messed up as I am."
This literally defines Barney and his love for Robin. Although he knew that she was not the perfect girl, he was still happy with her because they understand each other's feelings.
"I love our story. Sure, it's messy, but it's the story that got us here."— Barney Stinson
Even Barney and Robin couldn’t imagine they would fall in love with each other. And it’s the craziness of their relationship from the beginning that makes Barney say these lines about him and Robin ending up together.
