How to Detect Fake Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Headphones

Updated on April 20, 2016

Beats by Dr. Dre Studio: A Review

My personal rating for Dr. Dre Studio Headphones: 8.6/10
My personal rating for Dr. Dre Studio Headphones: 8.6/10 | Source

I would like to provide a short review about Beats headphones by Dr. Dre Studio before I launch into my advice about how to spot authentic ones.

These headphones are for hip hop and rap fans who like thumping bass and loud music. Beats have accurate mid- and high-ranges and a lot less distortion than most medium- to low-end headphones. The weakest point about Beats are their vocals: Mid- and high-range vocals are overshadowed by the bass, but fortunately vocals can be boosted using an iPod (under Settings) or in any similar device. Most Beats fans like this style anyway. It is like having a mini sub-woofer in your headphones.

The best thing about Beats is their appeal to younger crowds. The black are my favorite. I love wearing them in public and displaying my headphones to the ladies. Some might call me a show-off, but that is only because they've got no style and definitely no Dr. Dre Studio headphones.

The price for these headphones can be awfully high (around $300). They can be purchased at any local store, however. If you are smart and observant, it's possible to find some real bargains.

How to Spot Fake Beats (No, It's Not the Packaging)

If you shop for Beats on eBay, always check for signs of Triple A (AAA) Batteries from Duracell. Customs will not allow foreign counterfeiters to ship Beats loaded with Duracell batteries. If the retailer says their Beats come loaded with a different brand of batteries, stay away.

It is also true that anybody can place Duracell batteries into a fake pair of Beats. The most important thing to look for is that the Duracell batteries come wrapped in plastic casing. Always ask the seller if there are Duracell batteries and if they are completely wrapped.

Obviously, when buying from streets vendors, Craigslist, or the eBay classifieds (Kijiji), be aware that it is easy to be scammed. Counterfeits have perfected sealing their packaging to make it look like it came from a factory. Be on alert and always ask to open the box to make sure the batteries are wrapped. It is a sin to sell fakes, but you can thank Duracell for trying to help you.

Packaging Is Hard to Counterfeit

The bright one on the left is real. The darker one on the right is fake.
The bright one on the left is real. The darker one on the right is fake.

Counterfeiters cannot exactly duplicate the image of Dr. Dre on Beats packaging. It is very hard to print with the correct contrast.

Don't be one of those wannabe detectives and look all over the box for little mistakes. Look at the face first. The bright one is the real one, and the darker one is fake. The image in which his neck is showing in the real one. This is because counterfeiters don't have access to high-end printers. The darker image may be nicer looking, but it is not authentic.

Why Some Real Dr. Dre Packaging Have Darker Faces

Some Dr. Dre packaging actually uses the darker face image. The most accurate way to detect counterfeits is the warranty code inside of the headphones' battery cover. So, check the battery cover and you'll know the truth about your headphone's authenticity. Call the manufacturer to verify your code. If they cannot verify, then you have a fake.

Counterfeiters are smart. They create different boxes for different regions. There have been reports that some counterfeiters can bypass the code, making it possible for fakes to be verified. Your only protection is to never trust unauthorized dealers and be on your guard at all times.

Fake Front Covers Have Subtle Mistakes

The cover on the left is real. The one on the right is fake.
The cover on the left is real. The one on the right is fake.

Take a quick glance. Do you notice the difference the way I do? If so, you can weed out 90 percent of fakes.

The differences between real boxes and fake ones include:

Text Color

  • The real box has white "by dr. dre" text, while the fake box has gray "by dr. dre."
  • The real box has white MONSTER logo, while the fake box has a gray MONSTER logo.
  • The real box has white wording under Studio, while the fake's is written in gray.

Biggest Differences

  • The fake is missing the TM logo below "by dr. dre" and beside right side "studio" located at bottom left.
  • The metal plate with the B logo is not shiny on the real one, while the fake model's logo looks shiny.
  • The fake has darker blacks and whiter whites.
  • The real box has nicer, natural lighting.

Another Way to Be Sure Headphones Are Not Fake

We all want to be able to look at a box and say "Okay, I am 100% certain this box is real, not fake." We know that the front covers are almost identical, except for the lighting on the headphones. The lighting on the real cover has a natural half-black, half-grayish tint to it, while the fake has more "pitch black" lighting. Also, notice the dents on the fake. This is an indication of foul play. Counterfeiters are famous for selling dented products, because their shipping provider (EMS) actually sucks!

  • Heads up for those who notice real Dr. Dre boxes with gray lettering: If you buy them from an official seller, then they are real. Monster is using gray lettering on its packaging. Be careful. If you buy an old fake, they will still have many of the characteristics described above, including darker faces and color distortion on the box.

Dr. Dre Studios: An eBay Buying Guide

Counterfeiters on eBay are crying because I am telling you this. Dr. Dre Studio boxes were sold on eBay using original photos taken from Monster Cable, so be careful. The first generation box has no TM symbol and the image of Dr. Dre's face is darker and shows no neck.

Only buy from eBay sellers with proof that they own a real pair of Dr. Dre Studios. Look for the batteries and check the box in detail.

In general, it is safer to buy Dr. Dre headphones on Amazon.

Final Red Flags of Fake Dr. Dre Studios

If there is no plastic wrapping on the touring case (that black case that contains the headphones), then it is fake. Counterfeiters are too dumb to purchase the plastic wrapping and wrap the boxes up. However, if someone smart enough buys a counterfeit item and wraps it, then this is what to look for:

  • Real Dr. Dre Studio headphones are packaged with an airplane adapter that is in a small, clear, plastic ziplock pouch with no red line.

Dr. Dre Pro versus Dr. Dre Studio

Announcement: Dr. Dre Pro headphones are designed for better thumping bass and stronger vocals. You will definitely enjoy Dr. Dre Pro more than Dr. Dre Studio. But if you are on a tight budget, I recommend you get the Dr. Dre Studio headphones shown above, as there are lots of fakes on eBay!

Do you enjoy the sound of Dr. Dre Studio?

There is the tm and the writing is between white and grey but there isn't a plastic rap around the box but everything is included does this mean it's a fake?

I know its been a while since this has been written. Thanks for this guide. I plan on ordering some beats and this will be a good reference to refer back to when inspecting them. Just curious, but is amazon a good seller? The beats website has amazon as an authorized retailer, but I've heard amazon can sell fakes too...plus I noticed the price was 100 dollars cheaper, and I'm a little nervous about that. Thanks!

hey I bought mine new but from a friend who opened the box and I checked everything out except for the plastic bag the studios were in since he was trying to sell them new he didn't want me to open it and then not buy them but I did for $60 and noticed there is no signature or serial number under the battery cover but the date is marked 10/2012 engraved in the plastic piece... are they fake if no serial number on the battery cover? everything else is real from the box to the serial on the box batteries etc...?

thanks for this post my beats are real and were bought from ebay for 199 but my mom just got a pair from there that are fake she got for 150 as soon as I took them out of the box I could tell. they looked so cheap and included no batteries. another way to tell on ebay is the seller wont accept returns, you'll have to open a case through ebay its the only way to make the seller return your money otherwise they lose their account.

Hey, this is great info. It's amazing to me, how they're always trying to counterfeit these things. However, I wouldn't spend the money on the Dre Studio. Too much money. For $100 bucks, you can get the Sony 9506s and you're going to get a quality headphone, that's going to make anything sound great.

    • wondersmoke lm profile image

@anonymous: The chinese are stepping up their game, you need to purchase from a legit retailer or risk getting a fake pair. Now the packaging has changed, beats has changed ownership.

If chinese can copy iphone5 before it release, the box packaging is easily duplicated.

Be very careful of web sites that look exactly like the dre website. My son ordered a pair and realized something was wrong when our credit card number was entered and no confirmation was given.. The web page is an exact copy. No merchandise ever arrived and I was able to dispute the credit card charge. The fake sites are usually in the upper end of the search engine. Shame on google for selling these adds to counterfeiters.

@anonymous: It is definitely a fake, someone can take a real box and swap it with a fake one. Many people can find real beats by dre cover swap it with their cheap fakes and include all documents even serial number. No batteries in most cases will mean it's fake. If it states it includes batteries and it doesn't then its fake. Check the box for more detail.

i just got new beats by dre. i checked separate websites about signs of fakes. everything fits the real deal (the pictures, the "tm" sign, the wrapping of the airplane adapter, the serial number, the little included documents of monsterlife.com and in all the different languages, the cleaning cloth). however, the main point...the batteries weren't included. i thought the person i bought it from just took them out, so i didn't care about this point. however, the package came completely wrapped, so its not possible that the batteries were taken out and the beats were sent after that....so guess i got fakes now, huh?

Just got an email from monstercable support: "Thank You for taking the time to contact us. The serial number can be 7 â 10 digits long. Best Buy is an authorized dealer of ours. If you bought your headphones there and you have a receipt, Monster recognizes the headphones as authentic". This means that for those of you trying to do the serial number verification on Monster's website who have less than 10 characters could still have genuine headphones.
