Hymns for my Funeral

Updated on February 8, 2014

Hymns for my Funeral

Funerals are for the survivors, not the deceased, and I want my funeral service to give comfort and hope to my family and friends. Because music is so powerful in setting the mood, the hymns to be played are very important to me. A hymn with a melody that is too somber can make the mood too depressing, while one that is too light hearted would seem out of place. I also want lyrics that reflect the values I believe in. I've actually thought about this quite a bit, and I've picked 3 hymns that I want played at my funeral.

Just As I Am Without One Plea

A beautiful song proclaiming God's compassion...

I want my service to open with Just As I Am Without One Plea. The tune is slow and contemplative, and the lyrics tell the beautiful story of God's compassion and forgiveness in spite of our fallen state. My favorite verse is verse 5:

Just as I am, thou wilt receive,

Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;

Because thy promise I believe,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

This really sets the tone - comfort, hope, and God's compassion - that I want the service to convey to my loved ones.

Jesus Sinners Doth Receive

A beautiful acknowledgement of God's grace and forgiveness...

The second hymn I want sung at my service is Jesus Sinners Doth Receive. This has a little more upbeat tune than "Just As I Am" but once again the lyrics tell the beautiful story of God's grace my favorite verses are 1 and 8 (complete lyrics are here).

1. Jesus sinners doth receive;

Oh, may all this saying ponder

Who in sin's delusions live

And from God and Heaven wander!

Here is hope for all who grieve-

Jesus sinners doth receive.

8.Jesus sinners doth receive.

Also I have been forgiven;

And when I this earth must leave,

I shall find an open Heaven.

Dying, still to Him I cleave-

Jesus sinners doth receive.

Verse 1 reminds us of the comfort we have in Christ, and verse 8 reminds us why we have that comfort - because Christ has forgiven us and will welcome us into heaven.

Christian Life Hymnal - Hymns for every generation and tradirion of Christianity

The Christian Life Hymnal is my favorite non-denominational hymnal. I come from a traditional church background, so I appreciate emphasis on traditional hymns instead of contemporary. Another thing I love about this hymnal is that it includes more stanzas for many of the hymns than more contemporary hymnals. The songs are indexed 7 different ways (including by topic) so it's easy to find your favorites. If you enjoy traditional worship music I think you'll like this hymnal very much.

I Know That My Redeemer Lives

Proclaiming Christ's victory over sin and death...

I want my service to conclude with I Know That My Redeemer Lives. The lyrics proclaim Christ's - and thus ours through faith in Christ - victory over death. The lyrics have been sung to many tunes, but my favorite is the Lutheran version, which is a very joyful and triumphant sounding song. My favorite verses are 7 and 8, which proclaim the hope we have of a heavenly home and then praise God for the hope He gives us.

7. He lives and grants me daily breath;

He lives, and I shall conquer death;

He lives my mansion to prepare;

He lives to bring me safely there.

8. He lives, all glory to his name!

He lives, my savior, still the same;

What joy this blessed assurance gives:

I know that my Redeemer lives!

      Glad to see that some people actually plan their own funerals. My mother did and it was a great help at a stressful time.

      Great choices! I want How Firm a Foundation, the hymn I used to sing to my goats as I milked them. Also, Be Thou My Vision.

      I think it's great that you can talk about your funeral ahead of time. I think if more people did that, it would be so helpful. Thank you for letting me read your hymn choices.

      I like this idea of specifying what you'd like your funeral to include. I'm hoping that mine will help the survivors fully appreciate that Jesus is my savior and that I truly am in a better place!

      Three truly great hymns! Good idea to choose what you want - the service should reflect your taste and values!
