Updated on September 17, 2014

Read Along DVD Featuring Funny Short Movies

If you're looking for a fun DVD for your kids or grandkids that you actually can tolerate watching, be sure to check out "I Stink." This Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD features the following short movies:

- I Stink

- Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

- Trashy Town

- The Remarkable Riderless Runaway Tricycle

- The Beast of Monsieur Racine

- Arnie, the Doughnut

These movies all started life as books first, and since they're from Scholastic, you know they're good! The movies are all accompanied by "read along" words on the screen, helping beginning readers know which word is being said. This is a huge help in teaching beginning reading.

I Stink

Read the Book, Watch the Movie

This video and book teach kids the alphabet (garbage contains apple cores to zipped up ziti with zucchini) and so much more!

The way the garbage truck makes his rounds while the rest of the world sleeps is a fun part of this sweet (and stinky) story.

I Stink, the Story of a Garbage Truck

I Stink!
I Stink!

After watching (or before) the movie of I Stink, read the book. It is just as delightful. Kids love garbage trucks and this one is so funny!

I Stink

Andy Richter narrates "I Stink," the title video.

He has a nice, gravelly voice just like

the kind of voice a garbage truck might have!

Trashy Town

is a rhyming story that kids love

to listen to then sing themselves.

Trashy Town

And More Books by Andrea Zimmerman

"Meet Mr. Gilly. He cleans up Trashy Town. He does it with a big smile and a big truck--which is sure to make him a hero with all the children in the neighborhood. David Clemesha and Andrea Zimmerman have created a rhythmic, repeatable refrain that will roll off the lips of every child. Dan Yaccarino's dynamic art puts the zip in Mr. Gilly's stride and adds style and charm to trash collection." Description from Amazon.

Movies About Garbage Trucks

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

is a sweet, quaint story

that was first published in 1939.

The Remarkable Riderless Runaway Tricycle

This fun real-life video (they use real people, not cartoons!) is a fun-to-watch sign of the times. It was made in 1982 and is a delight to watch with a little one!

The Remarkable Riderless Runaway Tricycle

by Bruce McMillian

The book The Remarkable Riderless Runaway Tricycle features photographs, making it a bit different than most children's books that are illustrated. The story is unique and so fun!

In the movie version on the DVD "I Stink," the live action movie of the remarkable riderless runaway tricycle magically escapes the dump and makes its merry way through a late 1970s town. Some fun scenes involve a jogger wearing those short shorts and a young Joe Mantegna as an eyeglass customer.

Arnie, the Doughnut

is a 2004 Bank Street

Best Children's Book of the Year.

Arnie, the Doughnut

Arnie is a doughnut who freaks out when he realizes doughnuts are meant to be eaten! This little movie is adorable and sweet!

The Beast of Monsieur Racine

Have some pears handy

to eat while watching this fun movie.

Ah, a delicious treat for a delicious story.

The Beast of Monsieur Racine

A delightful, if a little peculiar, story, The Beast of Monsieur Racine, is a French tale featuring a man, a pear tree, and a beast. So different!

I teach Library for PreK through 9th grade and the little kids love the Mike Mulligan and of course anything with the words "I Stink" would be a hit. I'll be ordering this from Scholastic. Thanks for sharing!

There's a kids' video called "I Stink"??? And I didn't know about it??? This sounds like exactly the sort of refined, highbrow conversation starter in which our household specializes... thank you so much for bringing this to my attention!

I've heard of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel but not the other stories on the "I Stink" collection. Sounds like educational fun for the children.

Never heard of these but, like your article on the Lego Watch, I'm on it!
