I Love Chocolate. Do You?

Updated on March 10, 2012

I have a confession to make.

My name is Ian and I am a chocoholic.

Boxes of Chocolates

When I go shopping to the supermarket there are small imaginary beings who live behind the chocolate shelves and push boxes of chocolates and chocolate bars into my trolley. Does this happen to you?

Some days I can go all day without eating any chocolate and go to bed feeling very virtuous. Then at 3am or so I will get out of bed, half asleep, and roam the house in search of chocolate. This urge is incredibly strong. Do you do this?

When I visit other people I find myself looking around their homes for chocolate so I often keep a stash in my pocket for emergencies – especially for stressful situations. Do you?

More chocolate!

Eating chocolate causes a chocolate high – a very wonderful feeling. But when it is over the low I experience can sometimes make you very sleepy. Are you the same?

I am a little bit overweight so if I lose 2 pounds I am happy and celebrate by eating some chocolate so that my weight graph is constantly horizontal. Is yours the same?

I know there are organisations (like Chocoholics Anonymous) to help me deal with my problem but I do not have the courage to pick up the phone or post on a site. Have you tried this?

If anyone has answered ‘yes’ to any of my questions I would love to hear from you. Any suggestions for cutting down on my chocolate consumption would be gratefully received.

But it has to be noted that I have absolutely NO INTENTION of giving it up completely – who could!?

Ian.

I buy Ahlaska chocolate syrup from amazon - pure - real - chocolate syrup - but I'm thinking of making my own. I just got 6 tins of organic fair-trade cocoa!

Drost - yes yum, Pat! I remember long tubes of round Drost chocolates. I should really have said Continental Europe for the best chocolate!!

Though in the US there's Ghirardelli, of course - yum, yum!

A secretary where my husband worked would go to Germany every other year and she'd bring me Drost cocoa and all sorts of goodies . . . yum!

Unfortunately or fortunately I have 4 within bussing distance - one of which has a HUGE food hall! Once or twice I have been really silly and bought so much stuff that I couldn't manage on the bus and they had to deliver it!!

You sound like me, Moon Daisy - a very happy person! Must be all the chocolate!!

      Hi, poowool5!

Thanks for your enthusiasm! Yes, I'm British - from Edinburgh.

And you're right about European chocolate. I love the dark ones from places like Leonidas where you get to pick which ones you want in your box - how cool is that? This Hub is great to talk to fellow addicts!!

Ha ha! Yes, I really shouldn't be allowed in there. Luckily I don't have one within walking distance or that would be deadly. As it is, when I do go in there for a skirt or something I come out with all sorts of edible delights! Glad you changed your mind about the support group. :)

The answers are yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes! How could I pass by this hub that speaks to my innermost soul! What is it in this dark delight that is so irresistible! Wish I could give it up a little bit, or at least be like my husband who can take one bite of a Twix then just forget about it (how insane is that?), but alas, I am totally and completely at the mercy of this manna from Cadburys (or Lindt, or Godiva, whatever). Think you must be English from the pix of choccies? Me too and I have to tell you it's the best stuff of all. Sorry, American friends, but Hersheys just ain't the same...

      You're absolutely correct, Pat.

You can't go too far wrong with chocolate from Switzerland, France or Belgium though!

I did - than I didn't and realized that a lot of "chocolate" products have NO cocoa or chocolate in them! Hershey's was Hershey's Chocolat Syrup, then it was Hershey's Chocolate Flavored Syrup - now it's just Hershey's Syrup (99% HFCS) - so I have to check what I buy very carefully.

Thankyou for the lovely comment, Moon Daisy - you made me smile!

There were 2 of those red boxes this morning - only 1 now!!

So you'll know where I bought them - are you like me and shouldn't be allowed in this particular chain of stores as you always come out with much much more of their delightful products than you had intended?

      Ian.

BTW - I'll take your advice about the support group.

Me too! I'm a chocoholic and proud of it! (And I have to say that I have sampled the chocolates in the red box in your first photo, and they are very nice indeed).

I like dark chocolate best, but I like all the other kinds of chocolate too. I have a weakness for Fry's Turkish Delight, just like calpol, and also for Crunchies.

I don't think you should bother with the support group. :) Sounds horrible!

I am a recovering chocoholic but do tend to relapse now and again, its fry's turkish delight that causes me to relapse :) I hope that you get some great answers on here :)
