'Orange is the New Black' TV Series

Orange is the New Black is a TV series with is a Netflix Production and began in 2013. The TV series is currently on it's fifth season. The first season aired in 2013 and it seems to be quite a popular show. I started watching the season late last year, and am currently on Season 3 now. The show tells the story of Piper Chapman, who was sentenced to 15 months in Prison for drug smuggling. The series is based on the true story of Piper Kerman, who served 13 months of a 15 month sentance and subsequently wrote a book about her spell in prison. The book has since been made into a TV Drama. And as I say, can be viewed on Netflix.

When I told my friends and family I was watching that, I have had positive responses. Quite frankly, it's not something I had ever considered watching, but when I first signed up to Netflix and saw this show in the menu, I thought I'd give it a try. How halfway through Season 3, I'm still enjoying the show and feel I've got to know a lot of the regulars in the show.

What I like about this is you get to see what life is like behind the bars of a womens prison. Piper is in a minimum security prison. And within this prison is a wide range of women from vastly different backgrounds and lifestyles. I like how with some of the characters they show clips of what life was like before they entered prison life, and the reason why they are imprisoned. You get to see them as a person, and not just as a number or an inmate. It's interesting to see how these women form friendships with each other when they are forced to live with each other. I'm not sure how I would cope behind bars. Piper Chapman came from quite a privilaged background, so prison life was a shock.

Every day life behind bars

It's interesting to see how people adapt to life behind bars. Each of the women are given a role and thus, learning new skills. When Piper first enters prison, she is given a job in the electrical department. It's certainly a skill she would never have thought about going into before entering prison life. I feel that whilst I'm watching this the women are de-humanized. They are called 'inmate' by the prison guards, not by their names. You can understand why these women form such close bonds with each other. It's also hard to see how it affects their friends and family on the outside. Although this is a minimum security prison, it's still a harsh place to be. Certainly this will change anyones behaviour and outlook on life. It's a scary thought.

It's intriguing watching this show. The book is based on the book written by Piper Kerman, also called Orange is the New Black. I've not read the book, so I cannot compare the show to the book, but I do intend on reading it. But I have enjoyed watching it. Yes, I do have some favourite characters in the show, and some I'm less than keen on. I think it's well written and gives me an insight into what prison life is like.

I love reading and watching stories/films based on real life events. The most recent film based on true story that I saw was 'Everest'. It wasn't up to my expectation unlike Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken' which I thought was very well done.

I have not read or watch Orange is the New Black yet. But reading your review, I must check if it's available on YouTube! I don't have a Netflix account and I don't intend to have one.
