Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love - Korean Drama 2013

Updated on September 29, 2014

Jang Ok Jung, Live for Love depicts a fresher story of the famous Jang Ok Jung who later on became Lady / Consort Jang Hee Bin.

There have been several Korean Drama about Jang Ok Jung (ie. Jang Hee Bin - 100 episodes KBS2 Drama broadcast in 2002 - 2003), but I only watched one of them, Dong Yi (one of my favorite Korean sageuk of all time). In Dong Yi, Jang Ok Jung (played by Lee So Yeon) was portrayed as an antagonist, a very wicked person.

So when I found out that this drama, Jang Ok Jung, Live for Love will portray Jang Ok Jung from other POV (point-of-view), I'm ecstatic! Many questions on my mind about how they will change my perception about Jang Ok Jung who is rooted in my mind as an evil antagonist. Will they make her as the protagonist? Will they make Queen In Hyun as the antagonist then? And what will they do with King Sukjong?

So far, they gave "clues" that Jang Ok Jung would start her live in the palace as a dressmaker, before she's promoted to be Queen Dowager Jangnyeol's lady-in-waiting & her fashion designer (I can already imagine her as the Queen's stylist / codi). Styling the Queen with beautiful hanbok, I approve! And can't wait to see how the plot will unfold.

About the casting, they have cast Kim Tae Hee as Jang Ok Jung, this will be Kim Tae Hee first historical drama but her elegance & her beauty make her the perfect actress to portray one of the most beautiful woman in Joseon's history.

Yoo Ah In is tackling his third historical drama and this time he will be King Sukjong. King Sukjong is usually portrayed as a weak man, who is swayed by his love between two women (or in Dong Yi, three women) and he has a hard time making his decision. But they mentioned that King Sukjong in this drama will be more romantic and stronger (I like it!).

My first Korean actor crush, Jae Hee will be Jang Ok Jung's first love Hyun Chi Soo. Unfortunately, they separate when she enters the palace, and he decides to try his luck in China. Years later, he'll come back to once again protect the love of his life.

Hong Soo Hyun, one of the most hardworking actress as she's been in 5 different drama projects in the last 3 years will be playing as Queen In Hyun. I love her subtle acting in the Princess Man and she will be the perfect Queen In Hyun. Very curious about Queen In Hyun's character in this drama as in Dong Yi, she's portrayed as a very sweet, caring Queen who unfortunately had to suffer from Jang Ok Jung's evil plans. She's best friend with Choi Sook Bin which will be played by KARA's Han Seung Yeon.

Lee Sang Yeob (lawyer Park Joon Ha from Nice Guy) will be Prince Dongpyung (King Sukjong's trusted friend & uncle). Yoo Ah In & Lee Sang Yeob bromance? Bring it on! =)

Jang Ok Jung is directed by Boo Sung Chul (My Girlfriend is a Gumiho) and written by Choi Jung Mi. It premieres in April 2013 after Queen of Ambition / Yawang concludes.

Are you excited and waiting for Jang Ok Jung to air?

About Jang Ok Jung

A very brief info about Jang Ok Jung / Jang Hee Bin

Jang Ok Jung was a very beautiful young woman, she came to the palace and became Queen Dowager Jangnyeol's lady-in-waiting; before King Sukjong (who's 2 years younger than her) fell in love with her beauty and made her as one of his concubine despite the opposition from his own mother. After she gave birth to her son Crown Prince Yun (the 20th King of Joseon, King Gyeongjong) and deposed the current Queen In Hyun, she became King Sukjong's third Queen, Queen Consort Hee Bin.

She's very powerfully supported by the Southern faction (Soron) who pushed the Northen faction (Soron) and she's done many evil things to help her reaching her ambition and rose up to be the Queen.

My First Impression

I joined Jang Ok Jung's ride with open-mind; and I was really eager to see how they will portray Jang Ok Jung as the protagonist. Jang Ok Jung is a gifted seamstress. She is a strong-willed woman with kind heart and she works hard to free her mother from slavery. Her handmade hanboks are very beautiful and people love her until her uncle ruins all her plans. Her uncle has a bitterness towards the Royal Family because of what happened with his own daughter. He's also the culprit which caused the turmoil in Jang Ok Jung's family.

Beside painting the heroine with a meaty storyline which makes me always want to cheer her up everytime she's faced with unfair treatment; I also silently supporting Crown Prince Lee Soon. He's smart, strong, and cheeky *sometimes*. One quote from him which I really love "I never take any promise lightly, regardless of that person's class". A powerful statement from Crown Prince who will soon become King of the nation. And I believe he'll keep his promise.

About Queen In Hyun, so far she's a very kind lady. She obviously was hurt when she wasn't chosen as the Crown Princess, but she repeatedly stated that she won't use any dirty tricks. She will try her best to be the Crown Princess, in a fair way.

To sum it up, after watching the first 6 episode, I'm hooked with Jang Ok Jung because this drama has:

- Beautiful hanboks (tick)

- Solid plot with twisted political story (tick)

- Sizzling chemistry (tick)

- Great acting, even from Kim Tae Hee (tick)

- Bromance [Yoo Ah In as Crown Prince Lee Soon / King Sukjong & Lee Sang Yeob as Prince Dongpyung] (tick)

- Multi-dimensional Villain (tick)

- Good Cinematography (tick)
