My personal encounter with Jason Mewes
Jay & Silent Bob
A few years ago, my brother and I attended Wizard World Chicago which is an annual comic book convention for comic geeks such as myself. It was early on a Saturday morning (the 2nd day of the con) and we were standing just outside the entrance to the building, talking and taking a break from the festivities inside.
Suddenly, I see none other than HOLY CRAP IT'S KEVIN SMITH AND JASON MEWES WALKING RIGHT BY US! I slapped my brother across the arm, interrupting his story, and all I could do was point. With my mouth hanging open, after a few seconds I stammered, "Holy (expletive deleted), that's Jay and Silent Bob!"
They walked right by us into the comic con. Just 2 unassuming guys, Kevin Smith in long trenchcoat (aka "fat guy garb") and Jason Mewes looking like a neo-hippie.
Quick, what do you think of Jason Mewes?
Jason Mewes Heroin Addiction
Jason Mewes Battle With Heroin
During the recording of the Chasing Amy commentary track, Kevin Smith noticed Jason Mewes kept nodding off. Smith immediately entered Mewes into the first of a series of drug rehabilitation clinics in 1997.
Mewes "borrowed" Smith's ATM card and charged $1,100 in order to have heroin shipped to the hotel where the press junket for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was being held. At one point, Smith had taken Mewes in to live with him and his wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith. Unfortunately Jay was caught using heroin again and Kevin had no choice but to kick him out. Mewes then moved in with his mother, who gave him Oxycontin to ease the withdrawal symptoms. This plan (obviously) backfired and Mewes was soon addicted to Oxycontin as well.
In 2001, a warrant was issued for Jason Mewes' arrest. In April 2003, he surrendered and pleaded guilty to probation violation charges. Mewes was ordered to enter rehab and was told if he violated parole again, he could face up to five years in prison. In the same year, he made another attempt at sobriety after he fell asleep with a lit cigarette, nearly setting himself on fire.
Today, Mewes appears to be clean and healthy while still maintaining his off the wall personality that his fans absolutely adore.
Jason Mewes Tattoos
Actor Jason Mewes is standing in the living room of his Los Angeles home, taking off his shirt. Positioned in front of his laptop's webcam, he shows off the "15 or 16" tattoos he's acquired during his 37 tumultuous years. He lifts his shirt and motions first to an elaborate tribal design on his shoulder. "I got this one in Santa Cruz . . . and this one in Des Moines," Mewes says. "This one's from when I was 20, and I got this one in Utah after playing a prisoner with all these fake tattoos. The guy was gonna do a solid tribal on me, but I was like, "You know what, I want a face in there. Nothing too happy, though, not like a clown, you know?"
