A Family Friendly Leprechaun Movie List For St. Patrick's Day

Updated on March 17, 2015

A Leprechaun Movie List For Families

If you are looking for a wonderful, family friendly St. Patrick's Day leprechaun movie, you have come to the right place.

On this page, you will find a list of some wonderful Irish-themed movies including the likes of Darby O'Gill and the Little People, The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns and Finian's Rainbow. Most of these movies are classics but you will also find a few more modern movie recommendations, including information about Hallmark's new 2012 movie, Chasing Leprechauns.

For some of the movies you will find plot summaries, age recommendations, highlights, themes and Amazon customer reviews. I will be continuing to expand the information available on this page but meanwhile, I am sure that you will find a leprechaun movie or two to add to your Saint Patrick's Day movies list.

"Luck can change in the twinkle of an eye."

A Word About Shopping For Movies on Amazon

All of the movies on this list are available for purchase from Amazon by clicking on any of the links in the description or by clicking on the little orange button from Amazon that reads 'Buy Now.' I find Amazon's pricing to be very competitive and the fact that they offer FREE SHIPPING on orders of $35 or more is really a nice bonus. A final reason for using Amazon is that they have an extensive collection. Movies that you will not find at your local retail outlet can often be found through Amazon.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959) - Starring: Albert Sharpe, Janet Munro, Sean Connery

Darby O'Gill and the Little People is a Walt Disney film that has stood the test of time remarkably well. Darby is an older estate caretaker who prefers telling tall tales in the pub than actually working. When he is replaced, Darby is not sure what will happen to both himself and his daughter so when three opportunities present themselves, he grabs them up. It is a whimsical but not silly, supernatural but not outlandish film that is perfect for the entire family.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: 8 years old and up. Be cautioned though that there are some quite scary scenes in this movie which may upset some children.

HIGHLIGHTS: A very young Sean Connery sings and a song-and-dance number with hundreds of little people.

Darby O'Gill And The Little People

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:"This is PURE Disney...sweet, serious, and especially, great for kids. Let the fantasy take them to another place, as it did for me, when I first watched it. It's Albert Sharpe, though, that gives the crowning performance of his wonderful career. Watch it. Love it. Always believe..." ~~ R. Gawlitta

The Leprechauns' Christmas Gold [VHS]
The Leprechauns' Christmas Gold [VHS]

The DVD set called Classic Christmas Favorites doesn't cost much more than the single VHS tape does. To read more about the set on Amazon, click here.

The Leprechauns' Christmas Gold (1981) - Actors: Art Carney, Peggy Cass, Bob McFadden, Ken Jennings, Gerry Matthews

The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold is a beautiful Rankin/Bass stop motion movie featuring both 'full-grown human beings' and leprechauns. As you know, there's always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and, in this story, the fact that the rainbow leads to the gold is a dead give away and attracts screaming banshees (or evil fairies) that in turn cause all sorts of problems in their attempts to obtain Christmas gold! I was impressed by the quality of this film and I enjoyed the story, too. The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold is available alone as a VHS videotape or as part of a DVD movie set called Classic Christmas Favorites.

Finian's Rainbow (1968)

Finian's Rainbow (DVD)
Finian's Rainbow (DVD)

Starring actors Fred Astaire, Petula Clark, Tommy Steele, Don Francks and Keenan Wynn, Finian's Rainbow is another trip to Ireland.

The Secret of Roan Inish
The Secret of Roan Inish

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:"This magical story reunites a family on a small Irish island with little more than a young girl's dream and some hard work by she and her cousin...Whether you are a fan of the Selkie myth, Ireland, or are looking for a film that you, your children, and your parents can watch together, I heartily recommend this one." ~~ Laurie Gold

The Secret of Roan Inish (1995) - Actors: Jeni Courtney, Eileen Colgan, Mick Lally, Pat Slowey, Dave Duffy

The Secret of Roan Inish is a tale of myth and magic, in which an Irish girl goes to live with her grandparents and is certain that her missing baby brother is actually alive and being raised by Selkies. Selkies are seals who can turn into human beings. Fiona is not certain at first whether she believes in these creatures but eventually realizes that believing allows her to reclaim her family heritage. A quiet movie filmed on the west coast of Ireland, it is filled with beautiful images which help portray the magic that surrounds the people who believe in it. AGE RECOMMENDATION: 8 years old and up. THEMES: Loyalty, Commitment to Family & Following Your Heart

A Very Unlucky Leprechaun (1998) - Actors: Warwick Davis, Danielle Lombardi, Stephanie Lombardi, Tim Matheson, Lisa Thornhill

The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns
The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns | Source

The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns (1999)

The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns features Randy Quaid, Whoopi Goldberg, Roger Daltrey, Colm Meaney and Kieran Culkin. It was originally a television miniseries produced by Hallmark Entertainment, and is a romantic comedy movie in a fantasy setting which features a doomed romance between a princess fairy and a teenage leprechaun and some humorous characters (like that played by Whoopie Goldberg). An American travels to Ireland and rents a cottage but finds out that the cottage is inhabited by leprechauns who are involved in a battle with the fairies.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: A television miniseries which was not rated.

The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns
The Magical Legend Of The Leprechauns

Amazon customer Tamara Rape says that this movie made her fall in love with Ireland. With the legends, music and even one leprechaun named Mickey Muldoon. She says that the story took some creative license but that it was true to Irish folktales. She recommends it for anyone who has a "romantic bone in their body," who loves fairy tales and dreams of Ireland.

Leapin Leprechauns (1995)

Leapin Leprechauns [VHS]
Leapin Leprechauns [VHS]

Actors Ray Bright (II), Mihai Niculescu, Mihai Bunea, Sylvester McCoy and Razvan Ionescu star in Leapin' Leprechauns, a movie that remains available only on VHS video tape.

Luck of the Irish [VHS]
Luck of the Irish [VHS]

Luck of the Irish is another movie that remains available only on VHS tape.

Luck of the Irish (2002)

"Kid today. Leprechaun tomorrow."

Luck of the Irish is a Disney Channel Original Movie from 2002. It starred Ryan Merriman as a youngster for whom everything was easy. He was in the basketball team finals, girls loved him and he kept finding money. His luck changes when his gold coin necklace is stolen. It turns out that Kyle is from a leprechaun family and that the necklace kept him from turning into a leprechaun. Definitely a fun, family-friendly movie. Unfortunately, however, Luck of the Irish is only available on VHS videotape.

Hallmark's Chasing Leprechauns (2012)

Premiered on Hallmark Channel on March 17, 2012.

A New York business executive needs a vacation. However, instead of on a vacation, he finds himself traveling to Ireland to finish up a deal on a smelting plant construction site, which is supposedly the home of leprechauns. In an effort to close the deal, a tries to get the local leprechaun expert on his side. She believes that the land is occupied by leprechauns and therefore won't agree to the building permit. He tries to get her approval by learning about the customs of the town but of course (since this Hallmark movie) he falls in love…

Pinned to my Holiday board! Great ideas. St Patrick's Day is one of those holidays that I'm never really sure how to celebrate- lots of great movies here to watch though. I like scary movies, and remember watching the Leprechaun horror movies many years ago. Some family friendly ones I'd like to see would be "The Magical Legend of Leprechauns" and "Finian's Rainbow" those looked good!
