Logan's Run - a scary movie for someone turning 30.

Updated on January 24, 2016

When I turned 30, someone asked me if I'd ever seen the movie Logan's Run. I told them no, I hadn't seen it and they suggested I watch it because it's like a "horror movie" for people turning 30. I didn't really want to watch it because it's supposed to be a cheesy 70s scifi movie (which it is), but curiosity got the better of me so I watched it.

This movie is set in a domed city in the future where everyone is young and pursues a life of pleasure... until they turn 30! When you turn 30 you have to undergo a ritual, "Carousel," where you are "renewed." People just go along with it thinking they'll get to live again. Except they're vaporized and die instead.

There are some people who don't go along with the flow and hide because they don't want to get "renewed." These people are called runners and Logan is a "Sandman" whose job it is to track down these runners and "terminate" them.

This is definitely a weird movie but it also disturbed me and stuck in my mind. Not only did it make me feel old because I was at the age where I should be "renewed" but it also made me think how there are societies in the past and present where the government or maybe Church controls people's lives too much and people just blindly go along with things because that's the way it is. I wonder if things could get this bad in the future, and perhaps it could if people don't think for themselves and question policies that seem a little off.

This movie may not be for everyone, but I am glad I watched it and I have the book "Logan's Run" on my "To Read" list now which has some differences from the movie but I think it may explain things more.

What do you think of the movie Logan's Run?

There's also a Logan's Run TV series that I would like to watch. It came out after the movie and aired during the 1977 - 1978 TV season. It didn't last long as there's only 14 episodes.

@PaigSr: I stand corrected. I have seen the movie. I just had to see it again to remember doing so.

I'm so glad you watched it because it is a classic. Really old people, like my husband and I, often see something on TV that triggers us both to say "Carousel" and no one else has a clue what we are talking about.
