Mama Mia, The Musical

Updated on October 9, 2014

Take me to Greece!

If I can't go to Greece I can at least watch movies filmed in Greece. Mamma Mia combines the music of ABBA with a love story, with a chick flick and Broadway musical. You would think this combination wouldn't work. But oh, how it does!!!

Mama Mia is a story of a young bride-to-be (Amanda Seyfried) who is searching for her real father before her wedding. The cast includes such stars as Meryl Strepp, Pierce Bronsan and Colin Ferrel in the islands of Greece.

Between Mamma Mia and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants they have both given me this huge desire to ride a donkey up the steps to the Church of Agios in Skopelos, Sporades Islands, Greece.

I should put this Photo print Church of Agios in the family room as a reminder of my goal or bucket list for retirement.

Mamma Mia is an ideal chick flick, family movie or the perfect way to spend a girly afternoon.

Try NOT Smiling When Watching This Movie - Mamma Mia Movie & Soundtrack

I dare you, just try and not smile or laugh during this movie. My 15 year old stepson cringed while watching Pierce Bronsan sing and said, "007 doesn't sing, this is wrong on so many levels!", BUT, he still sat through the whole movie and smiled.

If you take movies, or life too seriously this may not be the movie for you. but if your idea of movies is to escape then put this one on your list. Meryl Streep may not be a Broadway singer, but she has the confidence to really belt out the songs and cut loose.

Seriously so many people have said she should of won an Oscar for her performance, you wouldn't know she had the pipes to sing like she did. Makes me think I could even sing.

Enjoy the Music of Mama Mia

Now you can play the songs on your piano or keyboard and sing along. There are both the Broadway and movie versions of the songs for whichever Mamma Mia is your favorite, and skill levels for both for intermediate and beginners.

The piano vocal songs from the Broadway version of Mamma Mia. They are different, so make sure you pick the right sheet music.

Mother Daughter Soundtrack

One day before Christmas my teenage daughter told me she wanted to watch the movie Mama Mia with me. I was ecstatic, an afternoon with my high school senior, this was a rare and special treat. We had the movie in our collection, but I hadn't watched it in many years.

What fun! Meryl Streep is such a versatile actress, and while I don't like her in everything, she just cut loose and was totally uninhibited as she sang in the movie. Just how did she belt "Dancing Queen" without taking a breath?

Although I grew up during the Abba years I can't say I was a huge Abba fan, but I did remember all the songs and watching the movie together with my daughter was so much fun and a trip down memory lane.

Little did I know I was being set up. During Christmas one of my gifts she gave me was the Mamma Mia movie soundtrack. The disc has been in my car CD player since Christmas and I find myself singing the tunes during work. I have several favorite songs from the movie which are below.

Play the Mamma Mia soundtrack in the car and I'll guarantee you'll arrive at your destination with a smile on your face.

Play the Movie Soundtrack in the Car

So as I inserted the Mamma Mia soundtrack into my car CD player I wondered if the songs would be from the movie and sung by ABBA, or would they actually be the actors. Because, really, the idea of hearing Pierce Bronsan singing during my commute didn't seem to fit with a good morning.

The soundtrack is in indeed the actors singing and you know what? It works. I could see the movie and scenes playing out in my head and in a way I was reliving the movie. The songs sounded better and Meryl Streep has some pipes.

All Your Love - Watch for the Frogman

Our favorite musical scene in the movie. Ok, I have several favorties, but starting at 1:37 I giggle like a little girl. I watch my movies with subtitles and so when I find YouTube videos I also like one with the lyrics so I can pretend to sing along.

Wait for cut 1:37, even my 20 year old Marine laughs at this part.

"All Your Love" sung by Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper.

Our Last Summer - Movie Version

This is my favorite song of the Mamma Mia soundtrack. No matter where on the CD I am, I back up to track #5 and make sure I play this song during my commute. The blue sky, blue oceans and crisp clear sky give all movies filmed in Greece a surreal feeling. One day I will park my beach chair over one of these vistas.

I warn you, if you think of Pierce Bronson as just 007, James Bond, you might have to stretch a little when you watch him sing. It's easier if you close your eyes. He doesn't do such a bad job, and me, I think he's just a little bit handsome, so I watch.

Slipping Through My Fingers - Try Not to Get Teary

Since my daughter will graduate high school this year and will be moving almost 500 miles away this song really gets to me and I get teary every time. Ok, I sometimes just bawl! Yes, I admitted it. I want this moment with my daughter. If you're a Mother you understand.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was a movie experience for not only me and my daughter but my best friend who would adopt us when the movie hit the theatre.

She has four boys and Jen was her daughter for the day when watched this chick flick. It's the story of best friends growing up and going their separate way while still trying to keep the ties of friendship strong.

Other Popular Movies Filmed in Greece - Chick Flick Movies

There is something about the country of Greece that says romance and love. It might be the blue ocean, the sun shine, or the loving nature of the Greek culture which creates a perfect formula for a successful movie.

Some of my favorite movies are filmed in Greece and here are just a few.

Thanks Lisa for the comment. I get teary on the Mother Daughter wedding song. My daughter is 19 so it hits close to home.

It's such a fun movie, light hearted and doesn't take itself seriously, I think that's the draw, so many movies try and "teach a lesson"

It's true, you can't help but smile--and sing along--when you watch this movie. Great songs. Enjoyed your review!

I've seen it once in Toronto and I love the movie too. Hard not to feel inspired by Abba music.

@TheLittleCardShop: Your comment made me cry, I'm bringing my daughter to college 500 miles away tomorrow and it was my goal to make a slide show with that song. I didn't get it done.

I really enjoyed reading your lens and listening to the music, especially 'Lay all your love on me' and 'Slipping though my fingers'. It is a great movie, and so is your lens.

I've seen this musical four times! Three times in Toronto (where I live), and once on Broadway! It's so enjoyable and this music is fantastic. (I personally like the musical better than the movie.) GREAT lens, it brought back some good memories! I also have the CD soundtrack, but it's ABBA singing the songs. It's great.

Mamma Mia is one of my favorite Musical Movies. I always liked ABBA and this movie is fun and beautiful. When I first watched it I was away from my daughter and I cried so much when I listened to Slipping Through my Fingers that I almost drowned everyone at the movie theatre hehe.

I made a photo slideshow of my daughter with this song. I could watch Mamma Mia over and over again. Beautiful review :)
