Marty McFly Costumes

Updated on September 14, 2015

Marty McFly

Marty McFly is, without a doubt, one of the most memorable movie characters of all time. He is partly to praise for the universal and timeless success of Back to the Future, a movie which has attracted and continues to attract fans with its wittiness, intricate plot, and fantastical idea on time travel. Michael J. Fox did a tremendous job of creating not only a character but a personality that many viewers can relate with. Below are the costumes he wore on set, which are as memorable as the character himself.

1980s Outfit: Marty from Back to the Future 1 - Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?

Marty McFly is Calvin Klein - "Just Relax Calvin, you've got a Big Bruise on your Head"

This is a funny video clip of the scene when the younger version of Marty's mother meets Marty for the first time.

Quotable Quote - (BTTF1)

Marty McFly: Whoa. This is heavy.

Emmett Brown (Doc): There's that word again. "Heavy." Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth's gravitational pull?

Back to the Future 2 Year 2015 Outfit (Shoes / Cap)

In the second movie, Marty is transported to the future. The year is 2015, a year of 3D holograms, hoverboards, flying cars, jackets that dry automatically, and (oh yeah!) shoes with power laces.

He wears a rainbow cap his silly son wears, a cool pair of aviator shades, a red/gray jacket made from some heavy duty rubber over his trademark red round-neck tee, and a sleek looking pair of running shoes which looks awesome even in today's standards.

It's awfully hard to get a jacket that looks exactly like the one in the picture.

There's one piece over on eBay which makes custom made to order Marty replica jackets but they are made from leather rather than rubber and are not perfect. They are, however, the closest you can get to the look (at least for now). If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, try layering a red nylon vest (with 2 front pockets) on top of a gray-long sleeve top. You can bunch up the gray top at the shoulder area for that "accordion" look the futuristic jacket has

Quotable Quote - (BTTF2)

Marty McFly: You're not gonna believe this - we gotta go back to 1955.

Doc: I don't believe it!

Second Marty's "Undercover" Costume (BTTF2) - The Black Leather Jacket

Marty has to go back to his parents' Enchantment Under the Sea dance in order to spoil Biff's nefarious plan and put things back to normal (return Biff to his old car cleaner status). But since another version of Marty is on stage rocking it out, he has to go undercover.

Marty McFly goes"incognito" in style with a black hat (a fedora I believe), his trademark red tee (of course!), a cool black leather jacket, and a walkie-talkie and binoculars to complete his mission.

Back to the Future Part 3

The year is 1885 and Marty is channeling his inner Clint Eastwood!

"Are you in there, Eastwood? It's eight o'clock, and I'm callin' you out!"

Quotable Quote - (BTTF3)

Marty McFly: [holding up a plate that says "Frisbee"] Hey, Frisbee, far-out!

Seamus McFly: What was the meanin' of that?

Maggie McFly: It was right in front of him.

Back to the Future without Michael J. Fox... Is it Possible?

Now that I've finished showing you all the possible Marty McFly costume ideas, it's time for the most important question. A BTTF Part 4 may never come into fruition due to Michael J. Fox's unfortunate condition. Which begs the question: do you think anyone can replace him as Marty? And if yes, who should be the replacement?

Do you think anyone can replace Michael J. Fox as Marty?

Did you Know?

Before Michael J. Fox came on board, Marty was played by Eric Stoltz. However, the director replaced Eric for Michael J. Fox and the rest is history!
