About MercyMe

Basic Facts About the Band

MercyMe was formed in Greenville, Texas in 1994. The band consists of the following members:

* Bart Millard (vocals)

* James Bryson (keyboards)

* Robby Shaffer (percussion)

* Nathan Cochran (bass)

* Michael Scheuchzer (guitar)

* Barry Graul (guitar)

The band signed with major Contemporary Christian label INO Records in 2001, but prior to that had released 6 albums independently. It was their 2001 single "I Can Only Imagine" which skyrocketed them to stardom and crossover success. This beautiful, soaring song about what it would be like to be in Heaven and first stand before God was inspired by the death of singer Brad Millard's father. Since then they have continued to rule the Contemporary Christian radio airwaves and inspire many with their music and lyrics. They have enjoyed 13 consecutive Top Five songs in the Billboard Christian Song Charts - including seven Number One hits!

What makes MercyMe unique is their willingness to take chances and experiment musically, while still fully embracing the sound and ideals of Contemporary Christian music. Their 2010 mega-hit album, The Generous Mr. Lovewell, is actually a "concept album" which derives much inspiration from The Beatles, in particular Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Their music can range from peaceful adult contemporary to retro new wave and dance-pop to "arena rock", which is part of why they have enjoyed such crossover appeal. Even many who normally don't think they like "Christian music" cannot deny the great talents and musicianship of MercyMe - and then find inspiration in their worshipful words and messages.

      Great band! I first heard of Mercy Me when "I Can Only Imagine" was the soundtrack of a video I saw on youtube about a marathon/triathalon pair made up of a father and his severely disabled adult son. I think they're called Team Hoyt.
