Hatsune Miku Concert

Updated on October 12, 2014

Hatsune Miku Debut Concert In Los Angeles

Hatsune Miku, the latest teen sensation made her debut concert in Los Angeles in 2012. This was no ordinary concert as Hatsune Miku is a 3-D computer animation. You got it! She is not a real person, only the product of software developers.

I was intrigued the first time I heard about her. A pop idol who is really computer animation, wow. It is a changing world when even a computer animation can have a following of millions who love her songs and has now gone beyond her shores to debut her own concert in USA.

Who Is Hatsune Miku?

A digital singing idol

Hatsune Miku is a sixteen year old girl with ankle-length aqua-colored pigtails, 158cm (5 ft 2in) tall and weighs 42 kg. She wears thigh-high boots and a very short mini skirt.

Her name is a fusion of the Japanese words Hatsu meaning (first), Ne(sound) and Miku (future) thus the meaning of her name "the first sound from the future". Hatsune is the surname while Miku is her first name as Japanese names have the family name in front followed by the first name.

This android star is the creation of Crypton Future Media in August 2007 and is the most well known vocaloid (I will explain this further ) and the first pop idol in the music scene. Her voice was created by sampling the voice of Japanese voice actress, Saki Fujita.

Hatsune Miku Concert In USA

Rocking her fans

Miku performed live to a jam packed auditorium at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. You may wonder how a 3D digital image can stage a live performance. Her hologram is projected on to a screen and she sings and dances with her friends, Rin, Len and Luca on stage while accompanied by a live band.

This is a pop star who will appear on time, doesn't throw any tantrums and can perform at a two hour concert without a sweat.

Hatsune Miku Songs

Miku's songs are a result of the Hatsune Miku vocaloid system, a software program.

Hatsune Miku Vocaloid 2

Most popular vocaloid

A vocaloid is a vocal synthesizing software. It can generate singing on the PC when you type in lyrics and music note.

Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid or a singing synthesizer with a female character. Her voice is created by taking voice samples from the voice actress of Saki Fujita and they are then altered by the synthesizer engine. Miku helped to popularize the vocaloid which until then had been just an obscure software program.

Crypton Future Media chose to market the vocaloid to the general public rather than high end music studios. Their target was teenagers and in line with that strategy they chose to have a highly appealing voice with an image to match. The task of creating this android was given to manga artist Kei.

The popularity of Hatsune Miku is due in part to Nico Nico Douga which is a popular video sharing website in Japan very similar to YouTube. Users of Nico Nico Douga would post videos with songs created from this software. There were remixes of original songs and also new creations.
