MONK - A Seriously Good Detective Story Series with Plenty Laughs Too
I love a good, serious detective story with unexpected twists and turns. Above all, nothing beats a detective story where the murderer turns out to be someone you never even suspected in the least. That's always the case with this detective series, Monk.
I also love good comedy! You know the kind that isn't overbearingly obvious but which gives you a really good laugh. Again that's the case with Monk.
Monk, with his quirky self, is my all-time favourite TV detective and detective movie, followed by 'Murdoch Mysteries' and 'The Mentalist'. Trust me! You'll never meet a more adorable detective than Adrian Monk (superbly played by Tony Shalhoub). He's a bit eccentric, his method of doing things may be irritating at times but he's always right and he always gets the bad guy or gal.
There's a twinge of sadness in his personal story, though, in that he lost his wife (Trudy) in a car bombing that he believes was meant to kill him instead. This has had a traumatic effect on him which has left him a little unstable mentally and emotionally as well as frightened of many things. So although he cannot return to the police force as an official police detective, he works for the police force as a Crime Consultant on their really hard to solve cases.
He's especially afraid of germs, heights and the dentist! Don't try shaking his hand or touching him at all.And he has a precise routine for doing everything, even something as trivial as brushing his teeth, that only his beloved caregiver - Sharona Fleming (played by Bitty Schram) in earlier series and Natalie Teeger (played by Traylor Howard) in later series - can tolerate. I must confess that I liked Natalie Teeger better.
He is loved and respected, though, by his former boss and friend, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (played by Ted Levine) and a rooky police officer Lieutenant Randall "Randy" Disher (played by Jason Gray-Stanford).
If in the past, while watching television, Monk was clashing with any other television show that I liked, bet your last dollar Monk took precedence! That's how good this detective show is.
This TV series was sooooo good that it "...held the record for the most-watched scripted drama episode in cable television history from 2009 through 2012...with 9.4 million viewers, 3.2 million of them in the 18 - 49 demographic" (Monk (TV Series), Wikipedia). It also won 17 awards including the prized Golden Globe Award and the Family Television Award. It’s a good clean show that you can watch with your teenage children without feeling embarrassed. (And we know there aren’t many of those kinds of shows around these days).
9.4 million viewers and I just can’t be wrong about how great this detective series is. Now go get the entire series because it's addictive and you'll need multiple doses of Monk!
Clips featuring some of Monk’s Loveable Quirkiness
I think it’s quite funny how Monk’s nicely arranged Captain Lelands’ computer keys. I don’t want him near my computer, though :)
Poor Monk! Bad guys trying to extract (ouch! Wrong word at the Dentist) from Mr. Monk. In this episode I really felt sorry for him.
And there’s Lieutenant Randy’s attempt at a music video that no one quite knows what to say after watching.
Some of my other favourite detective shows you'll just love...
This Canadian gentleman is another crime detective you'll enjoy.
A mischievously smiling detective, who catches criminals with' their hands in the cookie jar'.
He has a stiff upper lip but you can't 'pull wool over his eyes'. He always solves the mystery!
