Monsters University, Great for Middle Schoolers Too
My kids (7th and 8th grade this school year) saw this movie over summer 2013. They are on the borderline of wanting to still watch animated movies, but this was a lot of fun to watch. I can't believe it has been 12 years since Monsters Inc had been out in theaters. But this prequel did not disappoint.
The movie shows how Mike and Sully got to know each other in college and ended up becoming best friends. They had to work together in the end to get back into the scare program.
Even for older kids it's a movie that will keep them entertained. They get the inside jokes that are created for parents, but also get the lessons the movie is trying to show. In this case showing that hard work can achieve goals as well as working together and ingenuity.
For adults it brings back memories of movies like Revenge of the Nerds, animal House, and Old School. Of course Monsters University is rated G and can bring the comedy and underdog themes of those movies without the vulgar language and scenes, LOL.
When asking my 12 year old what he remembers about the movie. He remembers the competition at the Greek Scare Games, that the movie wasn't boring, nor was it sappy, and how Sulley cheated and changed Mike's scare score.
The events that follow changing the scare score leads to both monsters being trapped in the human world trying to get back to the lab. This adventure plus a good story line lead to a great family movie for all ages.
