Songs about Mothers and Sons
The Best Mother-and-Son Songs for Weddings, Dances, Birthdays, and Other Celebrations
Here you'll find a list of mother-son songs. As the mom of four boys and two stepsons, I can sincerely say there are no words to describe a mother's love. However, there are several mother-son songs that can bring a tear to your eye.
1. "If I Could" by Barbra Streisand
This is a beautiful dedication of a mother to son. The lyrics to this song express love and letting go. It's hard for a mom to come to terms with the fact that she will have to someday let her son go to make his important decisions on his own. She'll hope that she's equipped him with what he needs. If she could travel his troubled roads, she would.
2. "You Are Loved (Don't Give up)" by Josh Groban
Although many people think this song is more appropriate for a couple than mother and son, any parent will tell you that this is a very real sentiment felt by parents. The song is about love, and the lyrics deliver a profoundly deep message.
3. "I Knew I Loved You" by Savage Garden
"I knew I loved you before I met you. I think I dreamed you into life." This is an incredible song that can be applied to the love a mother feels for her child before he or she is even born. Its words ring so true for many moms-to-be. As little girls, many of us played house thinking about our dolls as our future babies, and we loved them even back then.
4: "A Song for Mama" by Boyz 2 Men
5: "The Man You've Become" by Molly Pasutti
This song comes from mom's point of view and expresses how proud she is of her son. It would certainly make any son feel honored to hear these words. I would be blubbering puddle of tears if I danced with any of my sons on his wedding day to this song. Just listening to it while I type these words fills my eyes.
5. "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" by Stevie Wonder
This is a song a mom can sing for her child's entire life. How many moms have sung this song to their boys when they were newborns? This song can come full circle as the son grows, and mom transitions from singing it to her baby in a rocking chair to rocking in that chair alone as he ventures out to build his life.
7. "This Is Your Song" by Ronan Keating
This is a moving and loving dedication song. If your mother is about to pass or has passed, the lyrics are extremely touching: "This is your song, I wrote it for you." It's a tear jerker.
8. "Beautiful Boy" by Celine Dion
This song was originally written by John Lennon, but Celine Dion's version is absolutely gorgeous as well. If you would rather hear it with a female voice, for mother and son purposes, Celine Dion really does the song justice. Like Celine, I am the mother of sons (I have four), so this song has powerful meaning for me.
Any mom will appreciate the words to this song. It is all about the tender loving care she feels for her son when he's a little fellow. The truth is, it doesn't matter how big our children become—they will always be little fellas in our eyes.
I Am Your Child, by Barry Manilow - Apparently this is the first song Barry Manilow ever wrote
Just can't make it through this song without crying, it's inspirational, heartbreaking, and stirs every bit of love you hold as both a mother and a child. It's sung from the perspective of the child.
9. "I Am Your Child" by Barry Manilow
Mother-Son Country Songs
1. "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts
2. "I Hope You Dance" by Ann Womack
One of the best country songs ever written. The words in this song will live on forever: "And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance." The words are great choice for wedding if the mom wants to share her advice and dreams with her son. This classic is a popular choice for mom-and-son dances.
3. "The Perfect Fan" by the Backstreet Boys
This is another perfect choice for a mother-son wedding dance. It will open the flood gates! The song speaks of a mom's support throughout the years and a son appreciating how she showed him how to walk without her guiding hands. The song concludes that she's always been the perfect fan.
A dedication from a son to his mom, sung from the point of view of the son. The words are deep and meaningful on how a mom has done so much for her son, and he knows it, and is telling her he knows it.
4. "93 Million Miles" by Jason Mraz
This song is a perfect song for a mother whose son is setting off to fulfill his dreams. It's sung from the perspective of the son who is receiving loving advice from his mother. She tells him that no matter what, he can always can home. This would be a good choice to celebrate a graduation or any other event marking a new chapter in a son's life. The song is from the album "Love is a Four-Letter Word."
5. "You're Gonna Be" by Reba McEntire
This song is sung from the perspective of the mom giving her child advice about life. She says she will help along the way, but sometimes she'll let her child make his or her own mistakes, so that he or she can learn. But despite it all, he/she is 'gonna be loved by her' - Makes a beautiful wedding dance song, or as message from a mom whose time is limited. If you need this song, you can get it here via an MP3 Download - Personally this may be my pick for a mother and son dance song. After hearing all of the songs, I felt that each of them was a great choice in their own way - But I have to say, this one could make the final cut. Brings me to tears.
