Movie Gifts -- Romantic Comedies

Updated on October 10, 2014

DVD Gifts -- Who Doesn't Love a Good Romantic Comedy?

Movie gifts never go out of style. What's better than giving a movie you love to someone you love? Well, that would be watching it with them. That's what!

Romantic comedies, also known as Rom Coms, always center around a couple who is kept apart till the end of the movie. That's the appeal. If the couple fell into each others arms in the first half hour, well, would we want to watch that?

These romantic comedy movies are recommended by me (and several million others who have watched them and loved them).

Romantic Comedies

~*~Movies About Food~*~

Some of the best romantic comedies

center around food.

A Serious(ly) Funny Movie

"Waitress" is a different kind of romantic comedy that is pure fun and full of quirkiness. The story line is serious (there's an abusive husband) and stars Jenna (Keri Russell) as an unwilling pregnant waitress, stuck in a crappy marriage, who falls for her doctor (Nathan Fillion). Oh, and she makes great pies.

Buy this movie for: That quirky person in your life who likes a dash of silly along with a great story line

The food: Pies, so many pies, but especially the Bad Baby Pie and Earl Murders Me Because I'm Having an Affair Pie, "You smash blackberries and raspberries into a chocolate crust."

Stranger Than Fiction

Will Ferrell Gets Serious But He's Still Very Funny

"Stranger Than Fiction" is an off-beat gem starring Will Ferrelll, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Queen Latifah. The food element: Ana (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a baker who gets audited by Harold Crick (Will Ferrell). And at one point he even gives her flours (see the YouTube video below).

Buy this movie for: The Will Ferrell fan or someone who thinks they don't like Will Ferrell

The food: Cookies and milk, and other food

They're Flours. I Brought You Flours.

No Reservations

A Romantic Comedy starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhard

"No Reservations" stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhardt and Abigail Breslin. Kate (CZJ) and Nick (Aaron Eckhardt) are thrown together in a work environment that is steamy for lots of reasons.

Buy this movie for: The more sophisticated movie watcher

The food: Memorable are the whole fish served to the little girl and the rare steak in the restaurant.

Because I Said So

Mandy Moore Has to Choose Between Two Cute Guys. Poor Girl.

In "Because I Said So" Daphne (Diane Keaton) and Milly (Mandy Moore) star as mother and daughter, both who bake and cook for a living. And the mother is pushing her little girl to date, wed, get on with it.

Buy this movie for: Your girlfriend who loves a good escape romantic comedy

The food: Cakes, lots of cakes

New in Town

Starring Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr.

"New in Town" is a romantic comedy that uses the typical I-can't-stand-you attitude from the view of both the guy and the girl. Of course they come around and there's tapioca throughout.

Buy this movie for: Watching with girlfriends and for when you need to practice your Minnesota accent

The food: Tapioca

Romantic Comedies

Set in England Are Always Fun

The Holiday -- Romantic Comedy

Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black Star

"The Holiday" is a fun romantic comedy with a unique premise. Two women, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz, exchange houses, one in LA and one in England, to get away after nasty breakups. Romance ensues (with Jude Law and Jack Black, no less).

Buy this movie for: Anyone who likes a good storyline, Hollywood movie buffs, and Anglophiles

Four Weddings and a Funeral

A Classic Rom Com

The premise of Four Weddings and a Funeral is unique and fun to watch. Especially memorable is Hugh Grant's character being pursued by Duck Face throughout the movie.

Buy this movie for: Your friends who are confirmed bachelors (of either sex)

Love Actually

My Favorite Romantic Comedy of All!

"Love Actually" is probably my favorite movie--period. The ensemble cast includes Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Kiera Knightly, Bill Nighy, and so many more. It's just fabulous.

Buy this romantic comedy for: Anyone you love

Notting Hill

Another British Romantic Comedy

"Notting Hill" stars Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, along with some "normal" looking British actors, which is such a refreshing change from everyone having to look like, well, a movie star! This is a fun movie that lets Hugh Grant show what he can do without being silly or mean.

Buy this movie for: The Julia Roberts and/or Hugh Grant fan

Romantic Comedies to Watch

Romantic Comedy -- Crazy, Stupid Love

With Steve Carrell and Julianne Moore, "Crazy, Stupid Love" is a clear winner. I recently saw this movie and yes, as the title says, love is crazy and stupid at times, especially when you throw Steve Carrell into the dating world after years of marriage.

Buy this movie for: Steve Carrell fans and lovers of smart comedies

Something Borrowed

Another new romantic comedy

"Something Borrowed" is a new romantic comedy starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, John Krasinski, and Colin Egglesfield. One girl is in love with another girl's fiance. I just watched Something Borrowed and have to say that this was a refreshing movie. Not all sunshine and roses. Very well done.

Buy this movie for: Single girlfriends

No Strings Attached

I recently watched this movie and just loved it! It was much more true to life, I think than so many of the sappy romantic comedies I've seen. The language is a bit R rated (well, a lot, but I liked that) and the characters seemed like genuine people (I mean seeing Ashton Kutcher's character wearing his college sweatshirt to a funeral... that could happen!).

Okay, I thought "Bridesmaids" was going to be STUPID, and it was, and hilarious!

This is a clever romantic comedy that features some crack-me-up actresses and a few funny dudes centered around female friendship, back stabbing, and car trouble.

The Giant Mechanical Man - Starring Jenna Fisher and Chris Messina

"The Giant Mechanical Man" is a slow-moving, lovely story of how hard it is for some people to maneuver the dating world or life in general.

This is a fabulous movie. Watch it.

I love romantic comedies. Reading this made me wonder what happened to Hugh Grant - he used to make such fun movies, but I haven't seen anything from him in a while.

I do, but my husband doesn't go for "chick flicks." I just watch them by myself.
