RED the Movie

Updated on April 9, 2014

Not your everyday Action Movie

I'm not a big fan of action movies (apart from fun sci-fi) but RED isn't your everyday action movie.

It's a load of laughs, former CIA operatives turned old fogies, getting together to do some merry blowing-up and shooting-down of sinister nasties in dark glasses who are out to kill them.

How can you go wrong with a cast like this?

Bruce Willis in RED

To be truthful, I'm not a big fan of Bruce Willis either, although I've warmed to him since adding Surrogates to my science fiction collection.

In RED, he's Frank Moses, a soulful character reading Romance Novels in order to flirt over the phone with Mary-Louise Parker, an employee of the company that sends his pension cheques.

But his Die Hard skills are called upon when heavies with high-tech weaponry break into his house.

Mary-Louise Parker in RED

Parker is droll, deadpan and very likeable

Her part is critical to the film, there's nothing of Cameron Diaz' dud role in Knight and Day here. Parker is both funny and endearing and, as the plot gets underway, a character you really care about. We can easily see why Frank Moses cares about her as well.

I was hoping not to get kidnapped .. or drugged. I was hoping you'd have hair. Not my best first date."

Helen Mirren in RED

Helen Mirren is, predictably, fantastic as the ladylike former CIA agent now running a cabbage-rose bed and breakfast that would make Martha Stewart swoon.

Once a hitwoman always a hitwoman and Mirren hasn't quite retired, taking the occasional job for private clients in between arranging flowers.

The movie is worth seeing just for the scene with Dame Mirren, in an elegant white evening gown, wielding a .50 cal machine gun..

Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich in RED

Morgan Freeman is as you expect - cool, calm and deadly. I've never seen Freeman give anything other than a superb performance.

Once again Malkovich plays a deranged character. Usually he gives me the creeps but in RED he's so over the top as the psychotic LSD-riddled paranoid delusionist, he doesn't make my skin crawl at all. He makes me laugh out loud.

I've got mine, it's joined my 'classic' shelf. One of those movies that I can watch over and over again.

I rented it because I saw Helen Mirren in it, but Bruce Willis is also in it. A light piece of entertainment, worth seeing.

Sounds like Red The Movie may be worth watching. There are vaguely similar themes in some of David Baldacci's novels (which I would have blogged about but lent them all to my father who gave them away!)
