My Favorite 7 Movies Starring Steve Zahn

Updated on October 24, 2013

Steve Zahn, from You've Got Mail to The Perfect Getaway

Steve Zahn is a great actor. My favorite 7 movies starring Steve Zahn include mostly romantic comedies, but a few are a little (or a lot) darker, with a definite serious side to them.

You might know Steve Zahn for his distinctive voice; it can be squeaky and high pitched and is totally recognizable. I think it's great!

In addition to my favorite movies, he also is the voice of characters in the animated movies Chicken Little, Phineas and Ferb, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Even though Steve Zahn is known mainly as a character actor, playing a slightly goofball guy in many movies, he is also has star quality and is a talented, versatile actor.

That Thing You Do! - He plays a crazy guitar player.

I love the title song and this movie! Lenny is the joker of the band, always cutting up. Here's one of his lines from when the band, The Wonders, was being interviewed: "Oh, I'm not here with these fellas. I've got a pig in competition over at the livestock pavilion, and I am going to win that blue ribbon!"

Steve Zahn's Role: Lenny Haise

Year: 1996

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Music

Stars: Steve Zahn, Tom Hanks, Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, Johnathon Schaech

That Thing You Do! - We're On the Radio!!!

The Perfect Getaway - Steve Zahn like I'd never seen him before

I don't want to give anything away in case you haven't seen The Perfect Getaway, but this is one of the best thrillers I've ever seen. Steve Zahn's role as Cliff is surprising, exciting, and his line, "Nothing bad ever happens in Hawaii, right?", is eerie.

Steve Zahn's Role: Cliff

Year: 2009

Genre: Action/Adventure/Mystery

Stars: Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant

You've Got Mail - Steve Zahn's minor role as George Pappas is stellar!

Steve Zahn's role as bookstore employee George Pappas is a small part but memorable. He reminds his boss, Kathleen Kelly, played by Meg Ryan, and coworkers Christina and Birdie, played by Heather Burns and Jean Stapleton, every chance he gets that he lives in a 6-room rent-controlled apartment. $450 a month. In New York City.

Steve Zahn's Role: George Pappas

Year: 1998

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Stars: Steve Zahn, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Parker Posey, Greg Kinnear

Management - Steve Zahn Stars with Jennifer Aniston and Woody Harrelson

Steve Zahn stars as Mike Flux in this 2008 film. Mike helps his parents run a motel in Kingman, Arizona and mainly works as the night manager. Jennifer Aniston is Sue, who travels for her job in art sales. Mike is smitten with Sue and he sets out to woo her.

Mike evolves as the movie progresses. At first he stalks Sue, but when they become friends, any creepiness is gone, for me. Steve Zahn brings his trademark innocence to this role and makes the movie.

Steve Zahn's Role: Mike Flux

Year: 2008

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

Stars: Steve Zahn, Jennifer Aniston, Woody Harrelson, Fred Ward, Margo Martindale, James Hiroyuki Liao

Riding in Cars with Boys - Steve Zahn plays Drew Barrymore's druggie husband.

This movie is based on the biography by the same name by Beverly D'Onofrio.

Steve Zahn plays a teenage boy (from the title) who gets a 15-year-old girl pregnant. The couple marries, has the baby, and at least one of the parents grows up along with the child.

Steve Zahn's Role: Ray Hasek

Year: 2001

Genre: Biography/Comedy/Drama

Stars: Steve Zahn, Drew Barrymore, Adam Garcia

Shattered Glass - Based on a true story of Stephen Glass, writer for The New Republic

Steve Zahn plays a journalist in this based in fact movie (again, from a book). Stephen Glass is a twenty-something writer for The New Republic who writes fantastical stories that wow everyone who reads them.

Zahn's character, a journalist for a competitor, along with a colleague uncovers the truth about Glass's writing.

Steve Zahn's Role: Journalist Adam Penenberg

Year: 2003

Genre: Drama/History

Stars: Steve Zahn, Hayden Christensen, Chloë Sevigny, Peter Saarsgard

Night Train - A thriller starring Steve Zahn, Danny Glover, and Leelee Sobieski

This film is a departure from many of Steve Zahn's roles. He conspires with two others riding on a night train to take a dead man's possessions, but they have to get rid of the body so no one knows his things have been stolen.

Steve Zahn's Role: Pete

Year: 2009

Genre: Action/Crime/Mystery

Stars: Steve Zahn, Danny Glover, Leelee Sobieski, Matthias Schweighöfer

One of my fave movies with Steve Zahn is Saving Silverman, I thought his chemistry with Amanda Peet was awesome. I also really like his chemistry with Matthew McConaughey in Sahara -- I always thought they should have come out with a sequel. Steve is definitely unappreciated for his range of acting skills.

What about Saving Silverman? Not my favorite movie of all time but Steve is hilarious as the resident rodent remover.
