My favorite Christian Movies

Updated on March 4, 2016

Getting Closer to God and Family

I'm a little weird. Jesus was a little weird, too, so I don't mind. My movie choices are also a little out of the ordinary. I can tolerate just about any kind except horror, even a silly comedy. I especially like the ones that teach me something new I didn't know before.

I read the Bible every day and every day I learn something new about Jesus. Movies about Jesus continue to teach me about him, too. Here's a small sample of my favorites. I hope you enjoy.

Popularity of Christian Movies

There is an interesting divide between the popularity of the Bible on the one hand and Christian movies on the other. The Bible is arguably the world's most popular book. Why aren't Christian movies equally popular?

The Passion of the Christ is the highest earning movie "made by a Christian promoting or embodying Christianity" since 1980. The closest candidates for the top spot are the Narnia trilogy followed by The Nativity Story, Courageous and Fireproof. Even The Nativity Story, currently fifth on the list, has earned only about 10% of what the Passion has earned. Why is the Passion movie in such a league of its own?

I haven't watched this movie myself and I'm not going to. I hear it is far too gory for me. It is here only because it is the most popular Christian movie in recent history.

It is the first big budget Christian film since Cecil B. DeMille's Ten Commandments. Both have all the elements of a movie that appeal to everybody, believers as well as non-believers. Both got the non-believers into the theaters or in front of the TV and managed to keep them there. Did they also turn non-believers into believers? Probably not much.

There are a lot of really awful Christian themed movies out there. Clearly, most have been made with more passion than skill. Christian viewers must be at least somewhat forgiving because some of them actually got rave reviews from somebody. We're going to leave the debate whether Christian movies make believers or not for another day. Today I just wanted to share some of the ones I like. I hope you do too.

And now, let us take a look at someone else's list of favorite Christian family movies. You are encouraged to ad yours in the comment section at the bottom of this page.

I have the movie "The Passion of the Christ" and it still is sealed...I bought the movie after I saw it in the movie had such an impact on me about the suffering that Jesus went through. Yes the movie is graphic but not more then any blood thirsty movies of the day...the difference is, we know Christ and what he had to endure for us, this hurts to watch, making me feel so least that's how I feel personally.
