Worship Rock - Every Bit as Heavy
There was a time I thought church music was nothing but ancient organ music, gospel or pop songs each sounding just like the next one. Boy, was I in for a surprise. Christian rock is just as heavy as anything else I know of. Find a few of my favorites below.
I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so today we will focus on the Christian rock music of that time. Another day we will take a look at more contemporary artists. Christian worship rock is stronger than ever.
Why Rock as Worship Music?
Music has been an integral part of worship since King David so why not now? Why not make it contemporary music? With Christian rock, the gospel now reaches a previously inaccessible segment of the population. The forms of worship have changed and so has its music.
The youth group leader at my church told me this story:
Last time he was driving the kids to their annual retreat, they were playing rap or hip-hop on the radio on the way up there. On the way back he asked them what they liked best about the retreat. He was blown away when they didn't tell him about the swimming, the bonfires or the nature hikes. They told him about the worship. On the way back the radio was tuned to worship rock. Does that answer the question for you?
It's probably no surprise that rock'n'roll did not receive a warm welcome in Christian circles. Impassioned vocals, loud guitars and drums along with dance moves openly sexual in nature just didn't fit into traditional church music. Rock'n'roll was the music of the counterculture, not the establishment.
The Jesus movement of the early 70s in a way became itself a counterculture, a reaction to the sex and drugs excesses of the 60s. Christian rock became the bridge.
Books About Modern Christian Worship Music
These books discuss the difference between secular and worship music. Not surprisingly, there is quite a bit of controversy. Opinions are sharply divided. Answer the question, "Where is the line? Is it entertainment or worship?"
Resurrection Band Videos - or Rez Band
Resurrection Band is arguably one of the most influential Christian rock and blues bands. It grew out of the Jesus People of Milwaukee movement in the early 70s and at least to some extent helped define the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) genre.

Stryper Videos - Glam Rock
Stryper polished it up and brought big hair. One of the few Christian bands that came close to becoming a household name.
Whitecross Video - Metal
Like so many other Christian rock bands, Whitecross dates back to the 80s.
Whitecross' style change dramatically in the late 90s when guitarist Rex Carroll left the band until the re-creation in 2000. Keep that in mind when buying Whitecross albums.
Rex Carroll Band Video
Sounds familiar? No wonder. Rex Carroll was guitarist in Whitecross and still is in its re-created form.
