Spotlight on Michael McIntyre - Great British Stand-up Comedian

Updated on March 22, 2013

Great Modern Stand-ups

Stand-up worldwide has changed a lot over the years. Probably the most notable difference being a progression from "joke-telling" to humorous observation and commentary. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of the old-fashioned joke-style stand-up, my favourite comedians are more story-tellers, observers and commentators. I know there are a lot of people who still prefer the golden oldies - take part in the duel below - Old vs New comics, it would be interesting to see how much of a difference there is in modern-day opinion. :)

I've chosen to spotlight Michael McIntyre specifically because, not only is he one of my favourite comedians, but his material is also accessible and funny to other nationalities, AND... I could find enough of his stuff that was G-Rated! Not so much the case with some of my other favorites!

So, here's a taste of Michael McIntyre - Enjoy! :)

Michael McIntyre

I first saw Michael McIntyre on the comedy quiz show "8 Out of 10 Cats" - he was on one of the teams, and the first thing that struck me (apart from the fact he was hillariously witty), was the way in which he spoke. I loved his style of speaking, and I still find his voice and accent fun to listen to.

I later saw him doing stand-up in "Live at the Apollo" - and was struck by his energy. That man is all over the stage! He is the most effervescent comedian I've seen, and his energy is contagious. Added to this, his material is brilliant - his commentary on every-day life is clever as well as funny.

A little background on him: He hit the "big time" in 2006 when he performed at the Royal Variety Performance. Since then he's appeared on numerous comedy panel quiz shows, and has seen great success in his own TV show: "Michael McIntyre's Comedy Road Show" in which he introduces various guest comedians. He is also currently the youngest host of the Royal Variety Performance!

He was the well-deserved recipient of the British Comedy Awards for Best Live Stand-up in 2009, and for Best Male TV Comic in 2010.

A mesmerising, warm performer, he is now also known for his appearances as a judge on "Britain's Got Talent".

Michael McIntyre - Pen Lies

Here's a taster for those who haven't seen Michael McIntyre before - this is one of my favourite pieces of his.... :)

An Audience of One!

McIntyre's first appearance at the famous Edinburgh Festival was performed to only one person! Only one ticket was sold!

On top of that, the tickets were "buy-one-get-one-free" but, as he points out: "The one person couldn't even convince another human being to come with them for free, to see my show." "It was just him and me, staring at each other."

To add insult to injury, that one audience member didn't laugh... and left early!

Michael McIntyre - November and December

Love this - and I definitely recognise myse... er ... I mean people I know ;)

No Debt Collectors Allowed...

McIntyre spent many years as a struggling stand-up, and getting into "substantial debt" before finally hitting the big time.

In 2009 he cancelled a performance at short notice, after finding out that he would be performing to debt collectors.

Having endured financial hardship (and presumably, unfavouable encounters with debt collectors) just a few years earlier, he wasn't prepared to compromise his principles - which he felt he would be doing in performing that night.

A wonderful gift for Michael McIntyre fans, this DVD of his brilliant performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in London, to a wonderfully receptive crowd will have you laughing out loud all the way through.

Michael McIntyre Takes off His Judge's Hat

McIntyre joined Simon Cowell, David Hasselhoff and Amanda Holden as a judge on "Britain's Got Talent" towards the end of 2010, but after just one season he is relinquishing his seat on the panel.

He has reportedly really enjoyed working on the show, but has been "itching to get back on stage" himself, and is turning his focus to a new comedy tour.

Michael McIntyre - The Man Drawer

One of his most entertaining topics! :)

Joke-Telling vs Observational Comedy - Which do you find funnier?

"On my way here tonight..." and "A man walks into a bar..." - do you miss the old style of stand-up, do you watch re-runs and laugh your socks off? Or do you find the old-fashioned stand-up style no longer funny, but cry with laughter as you recognise yourself and others in the observations of the modern comic?

I find the old-fashioned joke-telling style of stand-up lame - give me witty, clever observational comedy anytime!

Nothing makes me laugh more than the jokes of the comic greats of the past!

I like a bit of both - as long as it's funny, it doesn't matter if it's Tommy Cooper or Robin Williams

      Michael McIntyre Quotes

"I've got a little baby, I made him. He doesn't speak, he's 2. He's a slow learner, he's only got 2 words: car and map. I'm slightly worried he's trying to escape. If his next word is passport we are in serious trouble!"

"My wife and I both made a list of 5 people we could sleep with. She read hers out and there were no surprises .... 1. George Clooney ....2. Brad Pitt etc. ... I thought 'Ive got the better deal here' ... 1. Your sister"

      Michael McIntyre on the Train

Listening to other people's phone conversations on the train....

Sticks and Stones ... and Words

McIntyre has experienced a surprising amount of hostility, and criticism of his work, from fellow comedians.

What should have been one of the happiest nights of his career turned out to be one of nastiness and derision. He won the award for "Best Male Comic on TV" at the British Comedy Awards 2011

      - A "last laugh" - although he admits the jibes and snide comments about his work made him "feel awful".

Michael McIntyre DVDs are unfortunately only available in PAL format - which means they won't play on a "normal" American DVD player. Luckily there are "multi region" DVD players available, which will play both American and European DVDs. This one will play just about anything! It plays both NTSC and PAL DVD, but it also plays music - even home-burned CD-Rs! It will play MP3-encoded CDs and CD-RWs as well as standard CDs. On top of that, you can display custom slide shows by inserting a disc of digital photos.

The DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, and is easy to travel with. It's slim, compact, easy to set up and operate (with a user-friendly on-screen display), and its features include parental controls, frame-by-frame slow motion, multiple-angle viewing, and picture zoom. With universal power supply (from AC110 to 220 volts) it can be used in most countries. A truly universal player - it practically makes coffee! ;)

A great asset for those who want to watch Michael McIntyre DVDs - along with other PAL-formatted discs, this also makes an excellent gift for British (and other European) friends and family living in the USA. :)

I really like Michael McIntyre, although if you analyse his comedy, it isn't exactly intelligent or edgy. It's basically his superb delivery that makes him so funny.

Very good lens. I too am a Michael McIntyre fan although he isn't my favourite - that honour goes to Mr Rob Bryden and although he is not strictly speaking a stand-up comedian (he is so much more) our very own "national treasure" Stephen Fry is the King (or Queen, lol) of them all!

As much as I like Michael McIntyre he isn't my favourite. My own personal choice would be Milton Jones, a very funny man. Good lens
