My Top 10 Animal Movies

Updated on March 26, 2013

My Top 10 Animal Movies

This is my list of Top 10 Animal Movies that tug at the heart and caught my attention. Animal Movies have always been some of my favorite movies. They make me smile, chuckle and belly laugh. For a little while they transport me away to a different place.

Photo by Bo Tipton all right reserved.

We can fall in love with our Animal Movie heroes and they move through our memories untarnished by life. Unlike many Hollywood stars of today, our animal movie heroes do not have problems with drug addiction, failed marriages and other life crises.

This list of Top 10 Animal Films are ones that tugged at my heartstrings but made me laugh and at the end left me with hope that anything could be overcome.

I am not a movie critic although, I love movies. I do not judge movies by what others say about them. You will see Animal Movies on the list that critics did not like, but I did.

This list is my own memories. They are memories of a time when the big screen transported me to another time and place with a smile on my face. It was a time that when the movie credits came on I was not through and wanted more. After each of these movies I walked out of the theater with a renewed hope that things would get better.

So, welcome to my world where this list of Animal Movies is my Top 10 Animal Movies. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Coming in at Number 10 on the Top 10 Animal Movie List

"Firehouse Dog" Released 2007

This Animal Movie is about Rexx the top Hollywood dog star. As a star Rexx lives a life of luxury until he gets lost. In an instant the luxury is gone. No longer pampered, Rexx has to tough it out as a homeless dog. This is definitely a riches to rags story.

Shane, the son of the Captain of the Firehouse featured in the movie, ditched class and Rexxx, while homeless, helps catch Shane. Needless to say, Rexxx is not on Shane's favorite dog list. To make matters worse the firefighters adopt Rexxx even though Shane hates the dog

Photo from Amazon.com.

It may not be a long-term adoption because the Firehouse is closing soon. The Firehouse, appropriately called The Doghouse, seems to be always late on fire calls. Being late brings bad publicity; bad publicity causes the Firehouse to go under the ax.

Even with the Firehouse closure looming over them, Rex impresses Shane with his skateboarding tricks and they become inseparable friends. Just when Rex is about to help redeem the pride of The Doghouse Rex is smitten with love and the plan falls through.

The two friends work hard to help save the Firehouse. While trying to save the Firehouse the duo also tries to find the arsonist that set the fire which killed Shane's uncle. This movie has a love story, bad guys, fires, narrow escapes and much more which makes it worth watching.

"Firehouse Dog" is one of the Animal Films where the critics disagree with me, but I enjoyed this story enough to add it to my Top 10 Animal Movie list.

Firehouse Dog - You will love Rexx

"Eight Below" Released 1993

This Animal Movie is based on a true story. Shepard a dog sledder who works for scientist in the Arctic helps a scientist out and makes a late in the season, ill-advised trip to find a meteor. Once at the trips destination they get a call about an approaching storm. The storm is bad enough that they have to get back to camp immediately. Because of the storm, on the journey home the dogs save the scientist McClaren, who talked Shepard into making the trip, and Shepard.

At base, right after the dogs saved them Shepard has to leave his dog team tied up at the remote camp. As the plane takes off with Shepard on board the dogs are on chains and have no way to get food or to survive.

Photo from Amazon.com.

This movie is about Shepard's incredible struggle to get back to help the dogs and the dogs struggle to survive. This is an often times frustrating emotional journey so make sure you have the Kleenex handy. This is not a comedy but it will definitely make you appreciate the perseverance of the dogs and their best friend.

Eight Below - A wonderful story of perseverance

"Free Willy" Released 1993

What a story. The story starts when young Willy an Orca whale who is caught in a net ends up at an amusement park. Then a streetwise kid Jesse, who has been living on the streets, and is sentenced for vandalism has to clean up the same amusement park. After they meet, they teach each other what friendship is. Jesse also learns to trust people when he needs them the most. With an evil owner who is willing to kill Willy to collect insurance money and a desperate attempt to save him this movie is a great journey.

Photo from Amazon.com.

The most important part of this movie is that this movie inspired people to get Keiko the Star of Free Willy released from a Mexico City Aquarium. After the movie, a massive letter writing campaign started on behalf of the star. Once again proving that people can make a difference, all the letters worked. Keiko moved to Oregon for a while and then went off the Coast of Norway and into the wild. The story about what happened after the movie is as strong and moving as the movie was.

Free Willy - A tale of friendship and loyalty

Coming in at Number 7 on the Top 10 Animal Movie list

"Babe" Released 1995

How can you not like a movie with such an adorable character as Babe starring in it? Even if you don't like pigs, surely Babe is likeable. In addition, a duck who pretends he is a rooster to escape ending up on the table hangs is the supporting actor. A pig acts like a dog and a duck crows, what more can you ask for in a movie.

Photo from Amazon.com.

With the help of Mae an elderly sheep and Fly the sheep dog Babe learns to herd sheep. While Babe is learning to herd sheep the villains in the movie are trying to get Babe to be Christmas dinner. What the villains don't count on is that Babe has a lot of drive and with help from friends overcomes all obstacles.

Farmer Hoggett then takes a liking to Babe while Babe is busy learning how to be a sheep dog. Yes, that is right; Babe learns to be a sheep dog. Well if you are a pig who is a sheep dog it is harder for you to be Christmas dinner. A pig that herds sheep to keep off the Christmas dinner table makes perfect sense to me.

This is a great yarn about overcoming adversity and it will make you laugh at the antics in the barnyard. This film has a full barnyard to laugh at with over 500 live Animal Actors in this Animal Movie. So if you love animals in movies you will get you fill watching Babe.

This film, nominated for seven Academy awards, won the award for Best Visual Effects. It was also a box office success and is one of the highest rated Animal Movies of all times. It takes the number 7 spot on my list of Top 10 Animal films.

"K-9" Released 1989

Comedian James Belushi and a smart Alec German Shepherd, that knows exactly what he is doing, join together to bring a ton of laughs to this Animal Movie. The movie turns into a competition to see who can mess up whose life while trying to catch the bad guys. From the time the two meet it is not hard to tell which of the two is smarter Jerry Lee or Detective Dooley.

Photo from Amazon.com.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is when Jerry Lee the highly decorated police dog catches a cue ball and what he does to it. Even funnier is what Jerry Lee's solution of what to do after the cue ball is taken care of.

This movie was also a box office hit even though it came out after another Cop and Dog odd couple "Turner and Hooch".

"All Dogs Go To Heaven" Released 1989

This movie is set in New Orleans in 1939 and is about a dog named Charlie who is murdered and comes back to seek revenge against his murderer Carface. While busy getting revenge Charlie also has to prove he is good enough to go to heaven.

Charlie teams up with his buddy Itchy and they run into an orphan girl Anne-Marie who can talk to animals. Anne-Marie teaches the two dogs the lessons that Charlie needs to learn to get to heaven but not what he needs to get revenge.

Photo from Amazon.com.

So, off they go on an adventure with hungry giant crocodiles, lost watches, betrayal, and loyalty. This movie has so many twists and turns it will make you dizzy.

I think I like this movie because it does a great job of telling a story that is darker then most Animal Movies. It is not one I would recommend for real young children.

All Dogs Go To Heaven - Whis is a watch over and over movie so you can watch the watch.

You can get "All Dogs Go To Heaven" one and two together or separate. Or you can also get "All Dogs Go To Heaven" on a disk with "Ferngully"

Coming in at Number 4 on the Top 10 Animal Movie list

"Turner and Hooch" Released 1989

To make this movie worth watching you put together a cop who is a neat freak and add in a dog who knows how to slobber. When you add the two together you have Turner and Hooch one of the funniest odd couples in movies.

When Hooch is the only witness to the murder of his owner, Turner (Tom Hanks) decides to take him home so that Hooch can help solve the murder. Hooch proceeds to turn Turner's life upside down (along with everything in his house) while leading Turner through one adventure after another.

Photo from Amazon.com.

Not only does Hooch show what a dog can tear up but he also shows what a dog can put together as he helps Turner find a lady friend. This funny movie always gives a good laugh when you need one.

One side note, if you want to see how much a dog can slobber then this movie is a must see.

This movie was a tremendous box office success even though it was not received well by critics.

"Racing Stripes" released 2005

A Circus accidentally runs off and leaves a baby Zebra in a storm. (Similar to what happened in the movie Dumbo) Along comes a retired horse trainer that takes Stripes the Zebra home. Channing the horse trainer's daughter who wants to be a jockey takes Stripes in. Now you are set for none stop fun.

Photo from Amazon.com.

Nolan the retired horse trainer will not let Channing be a jockey because his wife, her mother, was a jockey and was killed in a racing accident. Meanwhile Stripes who is not a racehorse wants to be a racehorse. Throw in Goose who is a pelican that used to be a hit man. Then add Tucker a grumpy old Shetland who used to train racehorses and two young racehorses who hate Stripes. Stir this vigorously and you have a wonderful story with twist and turns that will have you on your feet cheering.

Although critics gave this movie mixed reviews it was a box office success and very well received in theaters. If you like to cheer for underdogs then you have to see this movie.

#2 of the Top 10 Animal Movies

Coming in at Number 2 on the Top 10 Animal Movie list

"Snow Dogs" Released 2002

A successful Miami Dentist (Cuba Gooding Jr.) finds out is adopted when his biological mother, who lived in Alaska, dies. He sets off to Alaska to do what many adopted children dream of doing, find out about his birth parents. He begins a journey that is supposed to be about learning more about his adopted mother but instead he learns about himself. Once in Alaska he meets his mother's sled dogs who are not overjoyed with meeting him. It doesn't take but a few minutes for him to figure out he knows absolutely nothing about dogs.

While he tries to find out who his father was he faces blizzards, thin ice, Thunder Jack a crusty old dog sledder and Demon the very unfriendly lead sled dog.

Photo from Amazon.com.

He does not know that being who he really is will help him find himself and happiness. Because of lies, what seems to be his biggest defeat turns out to be the key to the truth about his Mother and Father.

This Animal Movie made it to number 2 on my top 10 just because Snow Dogs is a great story. It didn't make me cry or burst out laughing but it did put many smiles on my face and drew me away to the cold of Alaska. Anything that can draw you into the story as Snow Dogs did is a good story.

Again this Movie received very mixed reviews but the people did not listen to the reviews and it was a financial success.

"Snow Dogs" - This snow covered movie will warm your heart.

Before we look at the #1 Animal Movie on this list

A Special Word of Thanks to My Assistant

I would like to give a special word of thanks to my assistant George who worked tirelessly advising me on this lenses. I know at times it involved long hours but he was always there doing his best. George spent a lot of time thinking and dreaming of what this lenses would look like. So George thank you for you dedication and hard work.

Drum Roll Please! #1 on the the Top 10 Animal Movie List is

"Brother Bear" 2003

This is a wonderful story about a boy who had to become a bear to become a man. Kenai kills a bear when the bear kill Sitka his brother while Sitka is trying to save Kenai from the bear . The bear dies needlessly and the Spirits turn Kenai into a bear to teach him a lesson.

Kenai's other brother Denahi shows up just as Kenai becomes a bear and thinks the bear, who is Kenai, has killed his brothers. Denahi gives chase and Kenai escapes leaving behind Denahi who swears he will kill Kenai the bear .

Photo from Amazon.com.

Two Moose named Rutt and Tuke, who are funnier then any Moose is supposed to be, and a cub bear who loves to talk named Koda set off on a journey to the lights with Kenai the bear. Kenai is not only trying to learn how to be a bear but is looking for his dead brother Sitka to get Sitka to change him back into a man.

When Koda tells the story of how a hunter killed his mother, it turns Koda's and Kenai's world upside down. Every great story has a great ending with a twist and this one certainly does that. This is one of the best endings to a movie I have seen in a long time and even if the movie was not as good as it is I would have watched it just for the ending.

Once again this movie received mixed reviews by the critics but it made over 250 million dollars in theaters and another 167 million in video. There were over 5.5 million copies of this movie sold on DVD and VHS. So apparently I was not the only one that thought this was a great movie.

Brother Bear - One of those movies you watch over and over again.

Brother Bear 2 is almost as good as Brother Bear. I would have placed Brother Bear 2 as number 2 on my list of Top 10 Animal Movies but decided to cover both of them at the same time. As you can see these are the most expensive movies so far which shows how popular they still are.
