Non-Slasher Horror Movies

Updated on June 29, 2015

Non-Slasher Flicks

I am a big fan of horror movies but I am sick of slasher flicks. One crazy guy running around killing tons of people in the goriest way is just not an art form. I like something with a story to it. A mad killer can be part of the story but not in one scene after the other. I became a fan of scary stuff from watching late night television with my mom. She was also a constant reader of the same type of stories. Needless to say I read a lot of horror books and even a bit of Sci-fi when it is done right.

These are all movies that I have seen and are among my favorites. I included a trailer to each of them so you can get a feel for the actual movie. I highly recommend everyone of them.

Watch

It seems like today no matter what station you watch on the television there is a horror show of some kind. I heard that people are quick to watch zombie shows because they can say " At least things aren't that bad for me". I was always a fan of the unusual and dark side of things so this onslaught of horror shows is a big plus for my viewing pleasure. If you enjoy to watch this type of movie you should check out all the flicks I reviewed here. Everyone of them is a must see that will keep you tied to your seat from the beginning to end.

The Stand

This was one of the best books I ever read. Done by Stephen King. The movie was first put out as a mini series and you had to sit through commercials with it. I hate commercials so this is probably the best way to see this good vs evil horror classic. The story is filled with dozens of characters and you learn about each one and their journey through life before and after the horror begins. Stephen King has a way of getting you vested in each character and understanding why they make the choices that are left for them after the entire world has come to an end. This is a long movie.

The Ring

I would not suggest you watch this late at night when you are alone. I did and even though I am an avid horror film fan this movie scared the crap out of me. It is a true horror movie that builds up each frightening event perfectly. It got so that I knew what was about to happen but could not turn away. The creepy video that is passed around to the characters is a masterpiece of strange. Horror fans will love this one.

Movie Night Snacks

You shouldn't watch any of these great horror flicks without at least a tub of popcorn. I find that it saves my nails from being bitten to the quick. I always feel that any movie night is not complete without some goodies to eat.

The Sixth Sense - The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series) (1999)

This movie is sure to give you goose bumps. It is a tale of a young boy who "sees dead people" and the man who tries to help him get past these experiences. Bruce Willis stars in this great movie. It has one giant twist at the end and I highly recommend it to any fan of good horror. It is a psychological drama with undertones of the supernatural.

The Mist

The way this movie ends blew me away. It is another of Stephen Kings writings and like always he delivers an awesome story. King is a fantastic spinner of tales that make you get to know each character and understand where they are coming from. Weather the story is about the end of the world from a "Super Flu" like in The Stand or creatures from an unknown universe. His attention to detail is always constant.

Triangle

This movie had me scratching my head trying to figure it out. Slowly it all falls into place. It is a true horror movie that is sure to give you some goose bumps. A great story that kept me interested and coming back to watch again. It begins with a group of people going on a day trip. They set sail on a yacht. The main character is a young woman and she cannot shake the feeling that something is wrong. When the yacht hits a storm in the Bermuda Triangle her suspicions are realized as the group is forced to board a passing ocean liner to get to safety.

@Niktravelfit: I agree with you on the movie Triangle. :) I am looking for something to watch that Netflix has. It seems like I have seen every one of the interesting horror movies out there.
