Meet Nora Ephron & Her Movies
Who Was Nora Ephron? Journalist, Playwright, Screenwriter, Novelist, Producer, Director, Blogger and So Much More...
Nora Ephron passed away on June 26, 2012, at the age of 71 from pneumonia as a result of leukemia. She leaves behind a fabulous collection of movies including the likes of When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and one of my favorites, You've Got Mail.
In the news, April 5, 2013, HBO announces the development of a documentary film about Nora Ephron by Ephron's son, Jacob Bernstein. Another program that makes me want the HBO channel.
On this page, learn a bit more about Ms. Ephron and her movies.
"For four decades Nora Ephron created complex, interesting female characters who captured America's hearts and always seemed to triumph in the end through humour and smarts, sort of like herself."
- ABC News
Nora Ephron's Career
Ms. Ephron was a writer and a director. She started off with a job in a mailroom at Newsweek and went on to write for the New York Post, New York Magazine and Esquire. She wrote many screenplays, some of which were adapted from books she wrote. Wikipedia credits her name with 15 movies and many awards and nominations. I'm sure you will recognize many of her movies when you see the list.
I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts On Being a Woman
In her book, I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts On Being a Woman, Nora Ephron uses her easy voice and her sense of humour to allow us to experience the ups and downs of a woman who is getting older and dealing with the issues, including of aging. In this book we learn that she loved to cook, loved the city and was a hapless parent but mostly we learn about what it is like to be a woman "of a certain age." This book has been called courageous, funny and moving, I'm looking forward to reading it and learning more about Nora Ephron and about becoming that woman "of a certain age."

writer of the novel and the screenplay.
Heartburn was a somewhat autobiographical novel that was made into a movie based on Nora Ephron's marital difficulties. It featured Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. Amazon calls it a "funny and painful look at the effects of marital infidelity and divorce." It also featured Jeff Daniels, Stockard Channing, Catherine O'Hara, Milos Forman and Kevin Spacey's screen debut.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
writer and associate producer.
Rolling Stone magazine said When Harry Met Sally "brimmed over with style, intelligence and flashing wit." While I've seen plenty of references to this movie including the iconic coffee scene, would you believe I have not seen it yet?
When Harry Met Sally is a 1989 romantic comedy set in a very nice New York that features friends who have feelings for each other. Billy Crystal was considered particularly charming and Meg Ryan "alive and intuitive" and the pair had great chemistry. It also featured music from Harry Connick Jr., and of course the Oscar-nominated screenplay by Nora Ephron.
writer and executive producer.
Cookie is a comedy film about a labor racketeer released on parole; the prosecutor who is trying to put him back in jail; and his partner who wants to murder him. The parolee needs a friend and his friend turns out to be his daughter. Cookie stars Peter Falk, Dianne Wiest and Emily Lloyd and is considered a fun film.
My Blue Heaven (1990)
writer and executive producer.
My Blue Heaven features Steve Martin as a mob informer in a witness-protection program who is placed in suburban California despite the fact that he does not fit into the neighborhood. Also stars Rick Moranis, Joan Cusack and Melanie Mayron.
This Is My Life (1992)
director and writer.
This Is My Life is a comedy about a single mom who becomes a famous comic, causing difficulties with the relationship she has with her daughters. It features Julie Kavner, Samantha Mathis, Gaby Hoffmann, Carrie Fisher and Dan Aykroyd.
This Is My Life has not been released on DVD. To watch it, you will need to be able to view a VHS tape.
Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
writer and director.
Sleepless in Seattle is a romantic comedy about an engaged New York woman and a grieving Seattle widower. The woman believes that the couple was meant to be together. Played by Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, the couple has chemistry. Amazon says, "it has an old-Hollywood charm that appeals to many." It co-stars Rosie O'Donnell, Rita Wilson and Rob Riener.
Popcorn World said, "(You've Got Mail) is everything we love about Nora Ephron. Her intelligence, her knack for characters and conversation, her comic timing, her warmth. You’ve Got Mail is a great big hug of a film."
You've Got Mail (1998)
director, writer and producer.
Sleepless in Seattle is a romantic comedy that stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. In this story, we meet two business competitors that do not like each other in the office but manage to fall in love via the internet. It is based on a novel called Parfumerie, which was also made into two other movies, The Shop Around the Corner in 1940 and In the Good Old Summertime in 1949. As is obvious from the title, this movie tells the story with a technological slant.
You've Got Mail was a financial success and is a charming movie. It is also, by the way, a Nora Ephron tribute to New York City.
Julie & Julia (2009)
director, writer and producer.
Although a couple of the movies on this list are amongst my favorites, it was not until this movie, Julie & Julia, that I learned a bit about Ms. Ephron. Her body of work was impressive and the highly anticipated Julie & Julia movie about the famous celebrity chef Julia Childs was another interesting movie featuring once more, "a complex, interesting female character who captured America's hearts and to triumphed in through humour and smarts."

"I'll Have What She Had..." - A memorable movie moment from Nora Ephron's movie When Harry Met Sally and a testament to a very accomplished woman.
If you are a big movie fan, you will understand the reference in this comic by Jeff Stahler that reads simply, "I'll Have What She Had." If you don't understand the reference, you need to get yourself a copy of When Harry Met Sally or, at the very least, watch this short video clip on Youtube from a very well known movie moment.
We think the quote and the cartoon are particularly suitable as celebration of the life of Nora Ephron. She accomplished a lot in her 71 years and we would be happy to "have what she had."
