Oscar-Winning Movie Once Is Now a Broadway Musical

The movie, Once, starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, was released in 2007, but I just recently watched it. Wow! If you haven't seen this low-budget musical, I highly recommend you do.

Like I always do when I watch a movie that I love, I found through researching these two amazing musicians that they had also made a documentary called The Swell Season.

The Swell Season is also the name of their group when they performed together after the movie, Once, was made. So, this weekend I watched The Swell Season. It was very enlightening.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova wrote the songs and performed them for the movie Once. And the song Falling Slowly won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Once opened as a musical on Broadway March 18, 2012. In June 2012, Once won eight Tony Awards.

Once, the Movie

Once is a 2007 movie that almost appears to be a documentary. The main actors, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, are musicians who had worked together and wrote many of the movies' songs.

Their characters are referred to as Guy and Girl. The simple plot line is described by the director, John Carney, as a guy who's a busker (plays songs on the street for money) who meets a girl. They develop a friendship through their love of music (he plays guitar and she plays piano).

She has a broken vacuum cleaner and he fixes vacuums in his dad's shop as his day job. The Hoover is another small but poignant part of the movie, I think, because she pulls the thing through Dublin to his busking gig then to lunch then to a music store where she plays piano each day because she can't afford a piano.

They write a few songs together and decide to record them when Guy decides to leave Dublin for London where his ex-girlfriend is living. It's basically that simple and lovely.

A Musical? Really?

I was skeptical about watching Once.

I mean, most musicals have people

belting out songs for no reason in the

middle of a perfectly good conversation.

Not so in Once.

All of the songs are sung as songs,

not just because someone feels like singing.

The music is really good, too! It's wonderful!

The Swell Season, Glen Hansard (from the Irish band, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist).

This 2011 documentary The Swell Season chronicles Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's life after winning the Oscar in 2007. They were a couple but broke up in 2009. The footage shows the challenges that come with fame.

      Hey Conner, thanks for ctmoenming and the correction. Not mayhaps though, the strings were definitely mislabeled. I've corrected them now. I'll try tabbing in the comments and see if it works. The last F though is hard for me to confirm from the soundtrack. I also tried listening to the version of the same song from The Frames' The Cost album and it was also hard to verify there.       So this is my attempt based on the film and soantdruck. It sounds me it could be quite close, but I am not very experienced musician so I am not sure I think Hansard uses his thumb on the E when plays F accord you can see it in the film, where he plays this song (slowly and with real accords, so you can learn it well;)). But I have too short fingers to do this, so I have tuned the E to the F on my guitar.       If You Want Me haunts me; I think it may be my favorite. Really, all of the songs are exceptional. As you say, the music makes sense as part of the story and never feels like an intrusion. This movie is a perfect, complete work of art.

      I have not seen the movie Once, but from your reviews I think I would like to see it as well as The Swell Season. The music selections are terrific and I really liked If You Want Me.

      I have seen Once and the first time I watched it I thought it was terrible. However, after the second time, I realized its subtle brilliance. I am a huge fan of The Swell Season's music. Nice lens! :)

      Wow I can't believe this but I watched this movie with my hubby last nite! I don't know the name of the songs but I love the one they played on the piano in the music shop and also the one they sung in the recording studio. And I love Marketa's accent!

      I have not seen Once and don't usually watch many musicals because of people just suddenly bursting into song for no particular reason but this is a musical for those of us who don't care for traditional musicals. The clips you share are wonderful with such personal interaction by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. I was expecting a string to pop on When Your Mind's Made Up and the ending just seems like I was sitting in their living room. You found a winner here and so nicely presented by you!

      I *love* this movie! "When Your Mind's Made Up" is my favorite song, and the rest of the soundtrack is great, too... Time to watch it again, I think...
