Orange Album Covers
Led Zeppelin and Crop Circles
When I was young I used to group my albums by the color of the cover - not alphabetically or by type of music. Some of my favourites were the orange ones. Led Zeppelin released two compilations of their best songs in 1990 and both used a cover with crop circles. "Remasters" was released on 15 October 1990 and "Led Zeppelin" boxed set was released on 29 October 1990. The pictures shows crop circles that appeared on 12 July 1990 in East Field, Alton Barnes, Wiltshire in England - with the shadow of a zeppelin over the top.
Both albums contains all their best music like "Whole Lotta Love," "Stairway to Heaven" and "Black Dog" but there are more songs on the boxed set. Very similar crop circles appeared many years later on 5 July 2006 in a field between Blofield and North Burlingham - could it have been Led Zeppelin fans having fun?

Red Sails in the Sunset by Midnight Oil
The cover depicts something nobody wants to happen
Red Sails in the Sunset by Australian band Midnight Oil has one of the most iconic album covers of any Australian rock band. It depicts Australian city Sydney in the aftermath of a nuclear attack. The Sydney Opera House was built to look like a ship with many sails and the sails in the title refer to the roof of the Opera House which is shown intact centre left on the album cover, while the Sydney Harbour Bridge is to the right. The cover art is by Japanese artist Tsunehisa Kimura. The album was released in October 1984 and made the number one spot in the Australian charts for 4 weeks, It also appeared on the US Billboard 200. Lead vocalist Peter Garrett later went into politics and represented the Australian Labor Party from October 2004.

Channel Orange is the debut studio album of singer/songwriter Frank Ocean, released in July 2012. He started his career ghostwriting for artists like Brandy, John Legend and Justin Bieber. The music is classified as R&B but has influences of jazz-funk, pop-soul, psychedelic music and jazz-funk. It is unconventional and the songs cover unrequited love, decadence, class, sex and drugs with meaningful lyrics and descriptive narrative. Ocean has a soulful and subtle voice that can alternate from falsetto to tenor. It was rated 2nd in the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll. Click through to Amazon and listen to the MP3 samples on the Frank Ocean page. You will probably like it.
Songs in the Key of Life was released in September 1976 and became one of the best-selling albums in Stevie Wonder’s long and illustrious career. Stevie was born blind but never let that be an obstacle. Even if you don’t recognize the titles you will have heard tracks like Sir Duke, Pastime Paradise and Isn’t She Lovely. This is the top 100 of Rolling Stone magazines 500 greatest albums of all time.
Willpower, released in April 2013 is the fourth studio album from Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. The cover features a photoshopped photo of his head and is one of the ugliest orange album covers around. Songs on the album feature big names like Britney Spears and Justin Bieber but it got many negative reviews. Listen to some of the samples on the Amazon page and make your own decision.
The album Blur was released in 1997 and is the 5th studio album of English alternative rock band Blur. This album is influenced by American indie rock groups and the single “Song 2” brought Blur mainstream success in the US. I like the whole album with its mixture of haunting instrumentals and eccentric pop. It went to the top of the charts in the UK and the US for its unique sound and is best known for Song 2 and Beetlebum.
Streetcore was the third studio album by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros and was released in October 2003 following the death of Joe Strummer. It covers a variety of styles including folk, rock, hip hop, blues and reggae. It is without a doubt the best of their 3 albums and is well worth listening to.

I love David Bowie and I love the cover of this album that was released in 1977. The photographic image of Bowie is a still from the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth surrounded by orange fiery colours that give him an ethereal and other-worldly appearance. Low is Bowie’s 11th studio album and the first of three albums he did in collaboration with Brian Eno. If you like Bowie this is a must-have album.
This is a 2012 digitally remastered version of the Beach Boys 1965 studio album that was released for the 1965 Christmas buying season. It is not a Best Of album and includes acoustic covers of three Beatles songs "I Should Have Known Better," "Tell Me Why," and "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," along with Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changing" and a handful of oldies, (Alley Oop, Devoted To You, Hully Gully and Mountain of Love). It represents an interesting transition in the astonishing career of a legendary rock n' roll band and only provided one top 40 single, "Barbra Ann".
This is the second studio album by Mudhoney and was released in 1991. Almost every reviewer looking back regard it as their best album. The name of the album come from a mnemonic that music students use to remember the notes (EGBDF) representing the lines on a treble clef. The album is on the list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
Little Richard had six Top 40 hits before he released this debut album in March 1957. He was a controversial performer at a time when African-American performers were expected to be polite crooners, but it charted at number 13 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. Every song on it is a classic!
This compilation of over 30 tracks is weighted heavily towards the period from 1962 to 1967 when the Beach Boys had a long run of hit singles. The album has triple platinum status as time has not diminished the appeal of these feel-good songs. There are all the great surfing songs like "Surfin' Safari" and “Surfin’ USA,” as well as “California Girls” “I Get Around” “Fun, Fun, Fun” and a host of other great tracks.
... and Still More !
Crowded House are a pop rock band from Australia and Woodface was released in July 1991 as their third studio album. Its tracklist includes 5 singles and the album reached number one in New Zealand, number two in Australia, number 6 in the UK, and made the top 20 in several European countries. It has limited success in the US perhaps because the track “Chocolate Cake” takes some low shots at American excessiveness with lyrics about Tammy Baker, following the 80’s scandal of Jim and Tammy Baker/Bakker. I love this album – sample some snippets and you might like it too.
“The Spaghetti Incident?” is the fifth studio album for Guns N’ Roses and was released in 1993. The title is an inside joke about a food fight between vocalist Axl Rose and former drummer Steven Adler. It has a mix of older punk rock and hard rock and debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200. It’s a good album that returns to their hard-rocking days of earlier albums.
Released in August 1998 this is the debut solo album of Lauryn Hill from The Fugees. It’s a neo soul album incorporating elements of hip hop, R&B, soul and reggae. It got rave reviews when released and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It has gone platinum eight times and earned five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. If you haven’t heard this album, you should.
Remedy was released in 1999 as the debut studio album of British electronic dance music duo Basement Jaxx. It includes their popularsingle “Red Alert” which reached number one on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart Two other singles from the album later reached number one too.
Broken is a September 1992 release from American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. It has 8 tracks and reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart. The music videos for 5 of the 8 tracks were censored which may have actually helped its popularity. I’m not so fond of the music, but love the fiery orange album cover!
