Patrick Swayze

Updated on December 9, 2013

Patrick Swayze is a dancer and actor who had some of his biggest movie hits in the 80s and 90s, most notably Dirty Dancing and Ghost. Some of his action film roles, while considered a tad cheesy, nonetheless have a cult following, including Red Dawn, Point Break and Roadhouse.

After many years of having a more quiet movie career, he made a great appearance as a sleazy motivational speaker in the cult movie Donnie Darko, released in 2001. Sadly he announced that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2008. However, while receiving treatment, he went on to star in the hit cable tv show The Beast.

Patrick Swayze passed away on September 14, 2009 at the age of 57.

DIRTY DANCING - "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!"

A coming-of-age story that spawned a dance craze and launched Patrick's career. Swayze stars opposite Jennifer Grey as Johnny Castle, Catskills resort dance instructor.

POINT BREAK - "Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true."

This movie has become so much of a cult classic, it's now a live stage show, where each night the role of Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves' character) is pulled from the audience and reads the lines for the part cold from a set of cue cards.

Okay, so this is my "guilty pleasure" Swayze movie, the sort of thing you really hope is on cable tv on a night you can't sleep or when you're home with the flu. Patrick plays Bodhi, a surf guru who moonlights as a bank robber to fund his ocean-oriented summers. The action is pretty good and Patrick even did his own sky-diving.

When word first went out that Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo were all going to do a movie and play drag queens, a lot of people shook their heads in disbelief. And then it turned out to be a really funny movie with some great performances!

I was crazy about him in Dirty Dancing, he had one of his greatest roles in the "kind bad boy" he featured. Nice lens!
