Plus Size Modeling Career for Curvy Women
A plus size modelling career has become a lucrative profession for the full-figured woman because fashion designers and merchandisers are beginning to pay apt attention to the earning potentials of the plus size apparel industry. And now more than ever, plus size models are used regularly for advertising campaigns and for the runway.
As far back as a few years ago, major fashion designers in Paris who had the foresight of the plus size modeling market potentials, showcased the plus size model in their fashion collections with fashion designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier using plus-size models in their Spring 2006 fashion show held in Paris, France.
In Milan, Rome, the fashion house of Elena Mirò regularly features catwalk shows twice a year during the Italian Fashion Week featuring plus size modeling.
And in London, fashion designers, W. Tempest and M. Fast used plus size models for the London Fashion Week showings for their Spring fashion collections.
Requirements for a Modeling Career
To be a plus size model the acceptable height is usually about 5'9" (or 175.3 cm). And a plus size model must have flawless skin and must possess a perfect bone structure, a good gait, and a proportionate body.
These requirements are not much different from those required of other fashion models. The only difference is that the plus size models have bigger busts, larger waists measurements, and wider hips.
Plus Size Modeling Job Opportunities
Though many believe that a plus size model is engaged primarily in plus size modeling for clothing, plus size models are also involved in other modeling works that's not only related to large sized apparel but in other industries, eg.:
- Stock photography
- Pharmaceutical products
- Lingerie & Intimates
- Household goods
- Advertising photography
- Apparel & Costume
- Shoes, boots and other footwear
- Costume jewellery
The type of work that plus size modeling entails is comparable to what obtains with smaller sized models.
Their jobs, as their skinnier counterparts, includes ad campaigns, editorials for magazines, fashion runway jobs, garment, including TV presentations and commercials.
Plus size models are also sought by the media to stimulate debate on the development of self-esteem and for those struggling with excessive eating disorders.
Breaking Into the Plus Size Industry
The best way to get into the plus size modeling industry is to find agencies that strictly represent full figured women.
There are agencies out there looking for beautiful, plus size women to work as models. Companies that focus on the plus-size market are always looking out for new and fresh faces all the time. Many manufacturers in the fashion industry are also seeking plus size models to showcase their plus size fashion design creations.
The majority of modeling agencies though are mostly located in major cities and metropolitan areas, because it is easier to find work as a plus size model in a large city, rather than in a rural area! Aspiring plus size models may need to travel out of their home base if they don’t live in cities like London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other major fashion spots.
