Red Skelton: My Tribute, Remembering the Best!

Updated on April 30, 2013

Say, "God Bless" to "America's Clown!"

This Lens is my tribute to RED SKELTON. Red Skelton, also known as "America's Clown" has/is always been the standard against which I rate all others.

"Richard Bernard ?Red? Skelton (July 18, 1913 - September 17, 1997) was an American comedian who was best known as a top radio and television star from 1"937 to 1971.

Quick, what do you think of Red Skelton?

Commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance

by Red Skelton

As a schoolboy, one of Red Skelton's teachers explained the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to his class. Skelton later wrote down, and eventually recorded, his recollection of this lecture. It is followed by an observation of his own.

I - - Me; an individual; a committee of one.

Pledge - - Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance - - My love and my devotion.

To the Flag - - Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job.

United - - That means that we have all come together.

States - - Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.

And to the Republic - - Republic--a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For which it stands

One Nation - - One Nation--meaning, so blessed by God.

Indivisible - - Incapable of being divided.

With Liberty - - Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.

And Justice - - The principle, or qualities, of dealing fairly with others.

For All - - For All--which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under God. Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer, and that would be eliminated from schools, too?

Red Skelton Quotes

A few of his quotes below

# "God's children and their happiness are my reasons for being"

# "I don't want to be called 'the greatest' or 'one of the greatest'; let other guys claim to be the best. I just want to be known as a clown because to me that's the height of my profession. It means you can do everything-sing, dance, and above all, make people laugh."

# "Today's comics use four-letter words as a shortcut to thinking. They're shooting for that big laugh and it becomes a panic thing, using four-letter words to shock people."

# "Mom used to say I didn't run away from home my destiny just caught up with me at an early age."

# Reflecting on his life: "I'd have avoided some of the pain if I could. Anyone would. But I wouldn't have missed knowing any of the people-even the ones whose leaving hurt most. In fact, the only thing I'm sorry about is that I didn't meet one particular guy, a clown named Joe Skelton. You know, he sure picked the right profession. I mean, a clown's got it all. He never has to hold back: He can do as he pleases. The mouth and the eyes are painted on. So if you wanta cry, you can go right ahead. The make up won't smear. You'll still be smiling. . . ."

# "All men make mistakes, but married men find out about them sooner. " (from "1,911 Best Things Anybody Ever Said," )

I remember Red Skelton. A genius of a comedian. My mom and I used to watch his show back in the '60's.

I am a caring clown and Red Skelton is one of my heroes. I was lucky enough to meet him once. A genius and clean - not the vulgar stuff we see so much of nowadays.

Thanks for the Red tribute. My 21 year old daughter loved Lucy so much she laughed aloud although pre-verbal. We saw Red Skelton as Clem on a wall while visiting CBS. Now I better explain who he was by sending this! I have already sent her some DVDs. We need reruns of Red like Lucy!

Great lens, Wbisbill. Thanks for sharing.

Red and I go back as far as the days when my baby-sitter was a color-blind (could only see black and white), one-eyed monster named Zenith. Always did love Red and even plug some of his older stuff in now and again.

      Remember "Three little words?"

The man was all about love.

There will NEVER BE a finer entertainer EVER! His PEERS considered him to be THE BEST.

Proof is they never wanted to follow him when on the same bill.

Someone had the nerve to use Red's Pledge of Alliance for a political post for Obama on YOUTUB. Everyone you loves Red should post a comment against it, no matter what your polical side. His pledge of alliance shouldn't be used in this manner.

Excellent lens. I had made my own because the one that came up first yesterday needed work.

For my brush with Red, read my lens.
