The World of Rio

Blu, a flightless Blue Macaw bird was originally born in the heart of Rio de Janerio. As a baby Blu was kidnapped by smuggers and taken to the states for sale, but the young bird falls off the delivery truck in Moose Lake Minnesota where a young girl named Linda finds him and promises to take care of him.

As the movie progresses we learn that Blu lived his whole life indoors. Blu never learned to fly instead he relies on getting around using his beak and talons. This Macaw bird is careful, and uncomfortable when he is faced with the undomesticated Jewel and the world of Rio de Janeiro.

Throughout the film Blu meets a wide array of birds that help learn about who he is and what he is capable of doing. As he gains confidence and finds love he is able to take on his biggest obstacal in life - flight.

Blu: Yeah sounds great, it's not like were just throwing ourselves off of a mountain, right?

Rafael: Actually, that was pretty much my entire plan.

Jewel from the Animated Movie Rio

Female Macaw

Jewel is the only female Blue Macaw bird. In the beginning of the movie Rio we find Jewel at the bird sanctuary trying to escape. Jewel is a wild bird who loves her freedom and cannot understand why Blu enjoys being a pet. The character of Jewel is voiced by Anne Hathaway. Jewel is Blu's love interest and the vessel through which Blu begins to understand the meaning of independence and freedom.

Though Jewel appears tough throughout the movie (taking on villain Nigel) she has a soft heart. While Jewel teaches Blu about the beauties of the outside world Blu teaches her that sometimes human can be trusted.

Blu: You see, who needs flying?

Jewel: Birds! Birds need flying. Flying is freedom, and, and not having to rely on anyone. Don't you want that?

Blu: Hmm, I don't know. Sounds a little lonely.
