Wizard Of Oz Ruby Slippers

Updated on September 8, 2014

Dorothy's Ruby Slippers

Dorothy, played by Judy Garland in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, wore the famous ruby red slippers. The Wizard of Oz was one of the first to use Technicolor. Dorothy's Ruby Slippers

really were very vibrant on screen. The films crew made several pairs of ruby slippers for Judy Garland to use during filming. Judy Garland wore two pair of the ruby slippers, a pair for dance scenes, and then a pair for other scenes. The felt on the soles muffled her footsteps on the yellow brick road.

The Story Of The Ruby Slippers

In the Movie "The Wizard Of Oz" Glinda (the good witch) magically transfers the ruby slippers from the dead witch under the house onto Dorothy's feet and reminds the wicked Witch of the West that her powers are not effective without the ruby slippers in Munchkinland. The witch threatens Dorothy before leaving the same way she arrived. Glinda advises Dorothy to seek the help of the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City in her quest to return home to Kansas.

Glinda tells Dorothy she can find "The Emerald City" by following the "Yellow Brick Road", and tells Dorothy that she must never remove the ruby slippers or she will be at the mercy of the Wicked Witch of the West. The munchkins show her the way down the yellow brick road.

What Were The Ruby Slippers Made Of?

Well, they were not made of rubies! They were just ordinary red shoes, with red silk sewn onto them, and red sequins sewn onto the silk. If you were to see the real pair, you'll notice that the sequins are a darker color than what you see in the film, and they look more burgundy than ruby. This is because the color process of the time couldn't record true colors, so colors were adjusted so that they would appear onscreen as the desired color. Had the sequins on the Ruby Slippers actually been the same bright red as seen in The Movie, they would have looked orange on screen.

My wife used to act in Wizard of Oz the Musical not so long ago as dorothy, and her ruby slippers were provided by Harrod's although they weren't actually made of rubies either. What a cheapskate that Mr Al Fayed is!
