Sam Cooke-Gone Way Too Soon
They call him “The King of Soul” because he has a way of reaching into the depths of your very soul, seizing it and possessing it in a way that words cannot express when he sings.
For those who don’t know, “Soul” here refers to Soul music which “is a popular music genre that originated in the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s and which combines elements of African American gospel music, rhythm and blues, and often jazz”.
Sam Cooke departed this world on December 11, 1964 at the age of 33 years. He was fatally shot in a motel in Los Angeles but since this is a tribute to Sam Cooke, I will leave that right there and focus on the gift that he was to the world. He truly fulfilled his destiny with each soulful song he sang. He put all of himself into his music, touched millions of people and sang a range of music styles; gospel, negro spirituals, love ballads, rhythm & blues, jazz, dance, pop, rock & roll, etc.
About his music and singing Sam Cooke said, “It was something I enjoyed doing and decided to give it a couple years, though I'm not making a lot of money now either!”. So it was not all glamour and wealth as has been the experience of many popular singers today who don’t even have half the talent that he had.
I must confess.I had a really hard time choosing which Sam Cooke songs to include for your listening pleasure here because I love them all! My all-time favourite Sam Cooke song is “A Change is Gonna Come” (I have included it among the videos in this lens/article for your listening enjoyment). I get goose bumps each and every time I hear him sing it.
May you be blessed by Sam Cooke’s soulful voice and music!
