Same Time, Next Year

Updated on September 14, 2014

My favorite movie with Ellen Burstyn

Same Time, Next Year is one of the most popular romantic movies of all times. It has surprisingly simple plot with astonishing execution. I still remember when I accidentally saw it for the first time (I think I missed first five to ten minutes) and couldn't stop watching.

I just wanted to know what happens next. Can this couple really get away with the idea of getting together once a year and keep a secret? They are both married to others! Can they keep the relationship going despite the fact they meet each other only for one day in a year? Their looks and characters are of course non stop changing through time.

Movie has a simple setting because it is a remake of successful stage play from Broadway, signed by Bernard Slade who adapted it for the screen too. Ellen Burstyn excels in the role of Doris which got her Golden Globe for Best Actress and nomination for Academy Award in the same category. She portrayed Doris on stage and earned a Tony too!

It is not only the cast which is worth watching this movie more than once, it is also brilliant showcase of society in selected quarter of the century with all the changes in fifties and sixties. Everything is done in mere six days! Like every 'normal' relationship the one in the movie Same Time Next Year has its ups and down with my personal favorite when Doris comes pregnant on their annual date.

The grand finale when George finds out his wife knows about the affair for more then a decade and ask Doris to marry him doesn't disappoint either. Al in all this is one of the 'must see' stories which portrays, comments and last but not least asks.

Can we create a situation like this and make the most of it?

It's almost two hours long movie with great reviews, filmed back in 1978, with excellent actors Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda .

What do you say about Doris's and George's relationship?
