Things You Never Knew About Saved by the Bell

Updated on September 3, 2014

"When I wake up in the mornin...."

Ahhh the beginning of the theme song to my favorite sitcom as a child, Saved by the Bell. If you grew up in the late 80's/early 90's, I'm sure you're no stranger to the Bayside High gang. This sitcom was so clean and innocent yet still dealt with problems that teenagers actually faced in real life.

The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story Trailer

Lifetime's premier of "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" on Labor Day really inspired me to start conducting some research. Of course the show was just acting, but were my favorite characters really as miserable off the screen as this movie depicted them to be? While the movie doesn't claim to be complete facts, I still had to find out what actually did happen when the cameras stopped rolling.

Do blondes really have more fun?

Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris) is a natural brunette. Yes, he died his hair blonde for EVERY SINGLE episode. He even said himself on a recent Good Morning America interview, "I'm surprised I have hair. Like, I can't believe I have hair now".

Change of Characters

There were originally only supposed to be two main females in the show. Elizabeth Berkley and Tiffani Thiessen both auditioned for the roll of Kelly Kapowski. The producers believed that Tiffani fit the roll for Kelly better, but they liked Elizabeth so much that they created the roll of Jesse Spano for her. Lisa Turtle was supposed to be Jewish. However, the producers loved Lark Voorhies so much that they changed the character.

Watch your mouth

The producer, Peter Engel, wanted to help the actors remain as close to character as possible. This meant keeping them clean cut, therefore, swearing was banned on set.

The Set

The original set of the hallway was never torn down. It was actually reused in shows like That's So Raven and iCarly.

Master of Disguise

Believe it or not, there was only one classroom used throughout the course of the entire show. They would just rearrange the set to make it appear as different classrooms.

Talk about a love triangle

All three girls dated either Mario Lopez or Mark-Paul Gosselaar at some point throughout filming. Gosselaar said it was awkward for everyone to date because even when they broke up, they still had to be in love on screen. Lark Voorhies (Lisa Turtle) and Mark-Paul had the longest relationship, which was three years long.

Darn Screech

It is believed that most of the influence for "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" plot comes from Dustin Diamond's (Screech) tell all book "Behind the Bell". The book bashes nearly every cast member except for Dennis Haskins (Mr. Belding). It is unclear whether the many accusations he made in this book are true or not. However, Mark-Paul Gosselaar explained in a recent interview that all of the cast members had very positive memories of the show. Clearly that statement excludes Dustin Diamond.

Did you love Saved by the Bell like Zack Morris loved Kelly Kapowski?

Who couldn't love Saved By the Bell on Saturday mornings and its repeats?! The Lifetime TV show was good enough to get the point across. It's always fun to hear more Behind-the-Scenes info about a favorite series. Your fact about the set still being used in new shows is my favorite!
