100 Sci Fi Movies that are Considered Greatest

Updated on June 17, 2013

List Of Best Science Fiction Films

Sci fi movies have always fascinated me. Either Books or films, science fiction has always been my favorite topic. Just from the idea of traveling time and visiting different time periods, or exploring space with a spaceship that travels much faster than light give me thrills.

I donât know exactly who proposed such fantastic ideas but I have read H.G. Wells and Jules Verneâs novels and I guess they were the basic inspiration behind such films.

From the very first sci fi movie A Trip to the Moon (1902) by Georges Melies to present day films, Hollywood has produced some of the best cult classic science fiction films. Now you can see the first science fiction film was on a topic which at that time looked ridiculous. Who would have ever thought of landing on moon? Agree it or not but JFKâs dream to land on moon and Apollo 11âs success was inspired from such books or movies.

In the 50s decade science was mainly used in horror movies (most notably in Space invasion films). Later on sci fi movies included sub genres like sci fi comedy, sci fi romance and sci fi action. Many directors worked in this genre and became global icon. Most notably being Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas.

I have always had interest in space, technology and extra terrestrial life, so I am big su(ker of this genre. Many movies might look stupid with unimaginable plot but there are several great films.

This page compiles the most famous and best sci fi movies ever made in the history of cinema.I have also selected my 10 personal favorites from the list. You will find many of your favorite films too but please notice that certain rules are followed while making the list :-

* Animated Sci-fi are not included.

* Sequel of movies are not included. They are combined with the original films.

Top 100 Science Fiction Movies - List Of Greatest Sci fi films

I would accept that there was no particular person who ruled this genre. But if I have to select any particular person who changed the face of this genre then I would obviously go with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

These two directors played a vital role in shaping the science fiction genre. Directors like Michael Bay, J.J. Abrams and Christopher Nolan are also my favorite directors in sci fi genre.

Which director or actor do you think is the best in this genre? Which sci fi film is your favorite? Pick and vote your favorite film from the list.

A Clockwork Orange (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Description :-

A Clockwork orange is one of the most controversial movie, hard to digest movie I've ever seen. But it was hard for me to keep this another Kubrick's classic out of this list of best sci fi movies.

I can't neglect a movie for being too bold and too realistic. The film focuses on psychopathic delinquent Alex Delarge (Set In Future Britain) whose interests are rape, music and violence.Alex was Portrayed by Malcom Mcdowell to such perfection as if he was presenting his on self among us.His violent day to day routine takes a turn when he is caught and used as an experimental subject by government.

The Movie was based on Anthony Burgess' novel of same name.I don't think anyone else other Kubrick could have presented this satirical novel in such realistic way.Visual effects and cinematography were stunning along with the timeless soundtrack featuring Beethoven melodies in dark manner.

Director :- Stanley Kubrick

Plot :- Alex Delarge is one notorious mate who love to loot people and rape ladies. When caught by police he is made as a subject to an experimental therapy designed to improve the society and control mind of criminals

Inception is one such brilliant film that takes you into the world of dreams.Dreams always are fascinating to us and Inception beautifully show cases that how important dreams are in our life.Like all nolan movies,Inception grows up with several unpredictable twists and turns.Characters are mysterious, storyline is rapid and cinematography is top notch. And in the end,the Nolan Formula continues where it is put into viewer's imagination to decide the climax of the movie.INCREDIBLY AWESOME.

Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary Collection (Planet of the Apes / Beneath the Planet of the Apes / Escape From / Conquest of / Battle for) [Blu-ray]

Description :-

In 1968 two sci fi movies changed the standard of Sci fi movies,One among them was Planet of the apes. Was it the plot, the amazing visual effects or the extra ordinary make up work that made planet of the apes memorable piece of sci fi work? Its hard to chose just one.

Not just it was a Sci fi film but a philosophical film with intelligent remarks on society and religion. After the success of Original, the story was continued with a long series of sequels (and remakes) but none of them was as good as the original.

Director :- Franklin J. Schaffner

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy [Blu-ray + Digital Copy]

Description :-

We've Seen sci fi horror, sci fi action, sci fi thriller, sci fi drama but we rarely see sci fi comedies. Thanks to Robert Zemeckis whose genius mind came up with such a extra-ordinary idea.

How will you react when you get a chance to meet your parents in their younger age? What if your mom or Dad fall for you?Back to the future gives you a chance to imagine this shameful but hilarious situation.Michael J. fox was the perfect choice for young and energetic college student Marty McFly.Christopher lloyd too did a great job as crazy scientist.Thomas F. Wilson's Portrayal of Biff is also yet another memorable role from the series.Though there were not many special effects but still it Zemeckis' Back to the future is a rare made film and that's the reason i put it up in the list.

The Terminator
The Terminator

Description :-

Arnold has done more sci fi films than any other actor. Most of his films are sci fi action flicks. The only reason behind this was due to the persona made by him in The Terminator series.James Cameroon, the genius mind behind the film was very choosy in casting.

The original Terminator focused on a deadly robot sent from future to kill future mother of James connor (Future leader of Human race in war against Cyborgs). Arnold was given the role of almost unstoppable cyborg sent from future.

Terminator 2 focused on another cyborg sent from future to kill young James. This time,However The family have Another cyborg(Arnold) for help.

The Major reason behind success of Terminator series was the main idea of Robot Vs Human which was much more realistic than alien attack or anything like that. All in all a classic sci fi movie packed with lots of action.

Star-Cast :- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn

Plot :- Kyle Reese is sent from future to save Sarah connor from an unstoppable human looking cyborg.

Aliens was directed by James cameroon who loved the original movie and wanted a sequel for it.The story continues many years ahead of original film and this time Ellen Ripley doesn't have to face one or two but a full colony of Deadly creatures.

# 3. 2001 : A Space Odyssey - An epic drama of adventure and exploration

2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]
2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]

Description :-

2001 : A Space Odyssey redefined the science fiction genre back in 1960s.Stanley Kubrick's sci fi drama was much loved by audience and critics. No doubt it set an example for modern science fiction films.

The film may seem to be slow but it was perfection of Kubrick who took care of every minute detail. The film was released in 1968 and man was still dreaming to land on moon at that time. The beauty of movie increases from the fact that technology shown in 2001 : A Space odyssey was not achieved in real 2001.

The Script of movie was developed by Arthur C. Clarke along with collaboration of Kubrick Himself. The use of expression more than dialogues,Immortal soundtrack, scientific accuracy and pioneering special effects makes 2001 : A Space Odyssey a perfect science fiction film. The pace of the movie may not be loved by all and the ending is hard to digest for many but Undoubtedly Kubrick's 2001 : A Space Odyssey, takes you away in silent and mysterious space.

Director :- Stanley Kubrick

Plot :- With the help of Super computer HAL, Astronauts and space scientist sets off on a quest about a mysterious artifact found on moon.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI) (Packaging May Vary) [Blu-ray]
Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI) (Packaging May Vary) [Blu-ray]

Description :-

George lucas created a fantasy world In fact a fantasy galaxy that was loved and praised by all.Star wars is an epic saga with lots of fun, adventure, action and drama.Everything was almost perfect for this trilogy, from the casting to the music, from the story to the imagination, from acting to direction. The saga was divided into two trilogies,One was sequel or the Original trilogy and other was Prequel trilogy.

The original trilogy received more favorable reviews from critics then the prequel trilogy. However,I loved the whole series. After all its hard to repeat the same success in 6 long movies.Cinematography of Star Wars was amazing and the plot included many great characters like Darth Vader,Han Solo,Yoda,Obi van Kenobi,Luke Skywalker and the list goes on.Every Movie was packed with new plot, twist, characters and enthusiasm, while continuing with the basic theme. The whole saga had huge impact on pop culture and every now and then the star wars movies are imitated.Hats Off to Lucas and a BIG thank you for what he showed to us and changed our world. May the Force be With All of Us.

Matrix got a captive plot. Most of the sci fi movies focused on the visual effects but Matrix not only showed stunning cinematography but also developed characters and plot beautifully.Neo,Morpheus,Trinity and Agent Smith were repeated in the trilogy and i really loved their work. Its hard to find any loophole in this Perfect movie (That's the reason I placed it to Number 1 in my sci fi list).

Director :- Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski

Star-Cast :- Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss

Plot :- A Hackers learn that he is living in simulated reality world which is controlled by machines and he must fight to overcome this.

Time travel for sure! Imagine all the cool things you could go back and see first hand. And also all the things you could change about your own life. Like what Biff tried to do in Back to the Future.

  • eightieschild 4 years ago

    Gotta be time travel.

  • irminia 4 years ago

Time might be far more interesting.

Neither, I would rather go teleport! But since you've asked... I guess I'd go with time travelling.

Time Travel through wormholes in space in time is possible? Right!

As any self-respecting science fiction fan knows, wormholesâ theoretical shortcuts through space and timeâmake for excellent time

travel portals. Wormholes connect two points in spacetime, which means that they would in principle allow travel in time, as well as in space. A hypothetical "tunnel" connecting two different points in

spacetime in such a way that a trip through the wormhole could take much less time...Through a wormhole to a planet billions of miles away!

According to general relativity it would not be possible to use a

wormhole to travel back to a time earlier than when the wormhole was first converted into a time machine. This means that anything which entered the accelerated wormhole mouth would exit the stationary one

at a point in time prior to its entry; This suggests that a wormhole time machine with an exceedingly short time jump is a theoretical bridge between contemporaneous parallel universes. Now that's COOL Stuff. Like your leans Thanks.

I would have to say that I prefer time travel. And alternate dimensions.

  • Paul Turner 6 years ago from Birmingham, Al.

    Time travel for sure.

  • cbessa 6 years ago

Human behavior in different scenarios, so, both would be good. But i think Time Travel would bring more discussions on Humanity.

I love movies & sci fi. I like to watch for the special effects, editing, story line, character growth...all sorts of stuff, as well as the movie itself! Aliens, in my opinion, is the best movie ever made. Only one mistake in the entire film, the plot is good, the acting is good, it is scary, it is sad, it is over before you know it. I have seen this movie over & over ( I watch a lot of movies more than once).

      Really good lens :)

In my opinion a good Science Fiction Movie does not completely depend on CGI, That's one of the reasons 2001 A Space Odyssey is classic. Kubrick wanted people to think and Imagine. That being said, I have not seen any of the Transformers movies, used to watch the cartoon when baby sitting my nephew, but the movies look totally awesome!

A couple things my friend: I liked it a LOT! All were killer sci-fi flicks, and if I had to make a list of mine, no doubt some of those if not all would be on my list. Let me ask you though, in those instances of a trilogy or series of movies, is it fair to include every one among that same ranking? For example, not ALL of the Star Wars, new and old, can be rated number 2, right? I mean maybe you should break them up and make it a Top 20! LOL.

I'm just messing with you, good postman! Keep up the good work!
