Sherlock in New York? "Elementary," my dear
I have loved Sherlock Holmes ever since I read the original Conan Doyle stories back in middle school. Thek" on the BBC and loved it. n I saw the Basil Rathbone movies on TV in black and white and I loved those too.. I was skeptical about an updated version of Sherlock until I saw "Sherlock" on the BBC and loved it, So then when "Elementay" came along, I wondered: Do we need another updated Sherlock?
I was also worried about a female Dr. Watson. Would the network be table to resist turning the relationship into a romance? If it had not been Lucy Liu p;aying the role, I might not have given the show a chance,
That, and Johnny Lee Miller's rougher, more unkempt appearance intrigued me enough to watch the show. Amazingly, it turned out to be great!
It is so refreshing to see a relationship between a man and woman based on true friendship and mutual respect, Making Holmes a real recovering addict rather than the casual user Doyle created adds new layers of complexity. I adore Rhy Ifans as Sherlock's brother, Mycroft, who has much more to do than he did in the original stories. And Holmes' forensic genius works just as well in modern-day New York as they did in Victorian London.
Veteran actor Aidan Quinn makes a perfect Captain, smarter than Sherlock's usual police partners but still slightly bewildered and sometimes frustrated by his brilliant but completely unpredictable consultant.
Even combining Holmes greatest love and his greatest foe in another gender conversion works!
The first season was a great start but in Season 2 the writing got even better. It is a blessing to have the season on DVD to help get us through to the next season!
Need to start at the beginning? Season one is also available!
See how it all gets done
Humor is important too
